Review: Predator – Hunting Grounds (PS5/Xbox Series S/X)

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

The PlayStation 5 upgrade for Predator: Hunting Grounds offers minor graphical improvements and a higher frame rate, but the core gameplay remains unchanged from the PS4 version. While crossplay is a nice addition, matchmaking wait times are still frustratingly long, and the absence of a solo campaign is a major missed opportunity. Honestly, the upgrade isn't really worth the cost unless you're a die-hard fan. Discover if the subtle enhancements are enough to reignite your hunting passion by diving into the full review!

I previously reviewed Predator: Hunting Grounds for the Playstation 4. This review will focus on the differences between that version and the current-generation release.

My initial assessment of Predator: Hunting Grounds on the Playstation 4 was lukewarm. The DLC Dutch Tapes, released subsequently, further diminished my enthusiasm. This raises the question: why revisit this title?

The adage that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results resonates strongly with Predator: Hunting Grounds, as my experience remained largely unchanged. The core gameplay loop is identical, and initially, it was difficult to discern any significant improvements in the upgrade from the Playstation 4 to the Playstation 5.

The core gameplay remains unchanged. While the setup is identical, I honestly can’t recall if Crossplay was implemented in the Playstation 4 version. Regardless, it is present in the Playstation 5 version. Graphically, the game benefits from a higher resolution and an increased frame rate of 60 fps, up from 30 fps. While visual enhancements are present, they are not dramatically different.

Owners of the Playstation 4 version are eligible for a reduced price on the Playstation 5 version. However, the cost remains considerable for an upgrade. If substantial improvements were present, the price point might be justifiable, but in my assessment, the differences are not significant enough.

The crossplay functionality is a welcome addition, expanding the player base. However, lengthy wait times, often exceeding five minutes, persisted during matchmaking. The absence of a solo campaign remains a significant drawback. Its inclusion would have elevated the upgrade to a more compelling proposition.

In conclusion, I do not believe the upgrade to the next gen version is warranted for most players. However, dedicated fans of Predator: Hunting Grounds may find some value in the enhanced visuals and performance. Current sentiment in online forums suggests that many players are content with the Playstation 4 version, which remains compatible with the Playstation 5.
