Review: Marshall Kilburn III

by Cenny Bjurvén

TL;DR

The Marshall Kilburn III is more than just a portable speaker; it is a timeless piece of design that brings iconic rock-and-roll aesthetics into the modern home. Beyond its stunning textured finish and satisfying physical controls, the Kilburn III delivers a rich, room-filling soundscape powered by a dedicated woofer and dual full-range drivers. With an astounding battery life of over 50 hours, this speaker offers unparalleled freedom for music lovers. While the premium price and IP54 rating are worth noting, the combination of robust build quality and audio precision makes it a serious contender for your next audio investment. From deep basslines to crystal-clear vocals, this speaker proves that Marshall still reigns supreme in blending style with substance. After we at Senses tested the Marshall Emberton III, which we were very pleased with, we became more curious about how the larger speakers performed. Now we have had the opportunity to test the Marshall Kilburn III, a portable speaker that combines classic design with impressive sound.

Design

Sometimes you come across a product that feels well-thought-out even before you press the power button. The Marshall Kilburn III is such a speaker. It doesn’t just play music; it also becomes a natural part of the interior thanks to its characteristic appearance. The first thing that caught my attention was the design. Many portable speakers today have a rather anonymous design language, while the Kilburn III clearly carries Marshall’s classic heritage. The textured surface, the metal grille, and the iconic control knobs give the speaker a timeless feel that fits just as well in a modern home as in a more classic environment.

I particularly appreciate the physical controls on the top. Being able to adjust volume, bass, and treble directly on the speaker provides a significantly more genuine feel than always having to use a mobile phone. The controls feel solid and contribute to the sense of quality that permeates the entire product. This is a speaker that is meant to be on display. Whether placed on a bookshelf, a coffee table, or out on the patio, it becomes a natural part of the environment rather than something you want to hide away.

Soundscape

Once the music starts playing, it is quickly evident that Marshall has put as much care into the sound as into the design. The soundscape feels rich, balanced, and powerful without becoming overbearing. The bass has a pleasant depth that gives energy to the music without taking over. Drums and basslines get a clear drive while the midrange remains open and natural. Vocals are reproduced with a fine presence, and instruments like guitars and pianos get a warm and detailed tone.

The treble contributes clarity and air without becoming sharp, making the speaker pleasant to listen to even for extended periods. Another strength is how well the sound fills the room. The music maintains its balance even if you move around the speaker, making it just as enjoyable for quiet background listening as when several people gather to listen together. Examples of songs I have listened to in order to understand how well the Kilburn III performs in this regard include “I wont change for you – Engestad”, “Hail the apocalypse – Avatar”, and “Heaven on your mind – Kygo”.

Performance

Technically, the Kilburn III is built around a speaker system where multiple drivers work together to reproduce the entire sound spectrum effectively. The heart of the construction is a 4-inch woofer developed to handle deeper frequencies and create the stable foundation that gives music both power and fullness. This is complemented by two 2-inch full-range drivers responsible for the midrange and treble, where vocals, guitars, pianos, and other details are reproduced with clarity and precision. By allowing each driver to operate within the frequency range where it performs best, the speaker avoids compromising on sound quality. Instead of a single driver trying to reproduce the entire soundscape, the work is divided, which contributes to better instrument separation, a more open sound, and a more natural impression. The design also allows the speaker to deliver a full and controlled sound even when the volume is turned up, without details getting lost.

One of the features that impressed me the most is the battery life. With over 50 hours of playtime on a single charge, you rarely have to think about when it’s time to recharge. I have been able to use the speaker for several days in a row, move it between different rooms, and take it outside without the battery becoming a limitation. It is exactly the sense of freedom you want from a portable speaker.

The build quality further reinforces the overall impression. The handle makes it easy to carry, and the entire construction feels robust and well-built. The materials provide an impression of quality that makes the speaker feel built to last.

Marshall Kilburn III

Summary

Marshall Kilburn III is a speaker that manages to combine classic design with modern performance in a convincing way. The timeless design allows it to fit into most environments, while the soundscape offers power, balance, and detail. Add to that a battery life that lasts significantly longer than most will need between charges, and the result is a speaker that feels well-thought-out from the ground up.

For me, it is primarily the overall package that makes the Kilburn III so successful. It looks fantastic, feels solid in the hands, and delivers a sound that makes it hard to stop listening. It is a speaker that is just as suitable for everyday listening as for social occasions, showing that Marshall still knows how to combine style, function, and sound quality in a single product. The only things preventing the Kilburn III from receiving a perfect score are the price and the choice of an IP54 rating instead of IP67, like the JBL Charge 6, for example.
