Review: EPIC – Elvis Presley in Concert

by Henric Brandt

EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert delivers exactly what its title promises: a front-row seat to some of the most iconic performances by the King of Rock and Roll. This well-crafted film also provides an intimate look at the man behind the legend, offering valuable insight into his life behind the scenes.

A History with Baz Luhrmann’s Filmography

My introduction to director Baz Luhrmann came with 1992’s Strictly Ballroom. Its unique visual language, rhythmic pacing, and focus on music left a lasting impression. Since then, I have followed his filmography closely—though, ironically, I have yet to see his 2022 biopic, Elvis.

An Unexpected Discovery

I was unaware that EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert existed until it arrived for review. Initially, I mistook it for a version of the 2022 feature film, but it is actually a poignant portrait of the artist. The documentary sheds light on the reality of Elvis’s career under his notoriously restrictive management. Unable to perform internationally because his manager lacked the proper credentials to travel, Elvis was essentially confined to the United States, leading to his legendary, yet grueling, residency in Las Vegas.

Elvis the Entertainer

Perhaps the most surprising and moving aspect of the film is the glimpse into Elvis’s sense of humor. Seeing him joke with the audience and his band members adds a humanizing layer to his persona. Having realized the extent of my father’s fandom at his funeral, this film helped me understand that appeal. Elvis was far more than a talented vocalist; he was an entertainer in every sense of the word.

Editing and Pacing

The production is exceptionally well-edited, maintaining a consistent and engaging pace throughout. Luhrmann’s expertise in syncing visuals with music is evident. As an editor myself, I was particularly impressed by how he seamlessly integrated disparate sequences that would typically be challenging to cut together.

The UHD Release

While the UHD release of EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert is impressive, it falls just short of perfection. Surprisingly, there is no Dolby Atmos track; instead, the disc features a DTS 5.1 Master audio track. While the audio quality remains solid, it lacks the immersive “punch” that Atmos would have provided. Conversely, the visual presentation is excellent. Given that the source material is over 50 years old, the image quality is likely as good as it can possibly be.

Missing Supplemental Content

Disappointingly, the release lacks supplemental features. This is a missed opportunity, as there is undoubtedly archival behind-the-scenes footage that could have enriched this Nordic edition.

Summary

Ultimately, I highly recommend EPIC: Elvis Presley in Concert. It offers a unique perspective that allowed me to see Elvis Presley in a new light. It is unfortunate that the technical execution of this release doesn’t quite reach its full potential, as a few improvements would have significantly elevated the overall rating.
