Review: Ereb Altor – Kopparhavet (RPG expansion)

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

For fans of Drakar och Demoner, the Ereb Altor: Kopparhavet expansion offers an immersive leap into a legendary campaign world. This substantial pack features two core books that modularize geography, culture, and magic, providing Game Masters with a rich, simulation-oriented toolkit. While the depth of content requires thorough preparation and a significant financial investment, the technical quality and world-building are exceptional. From the detailed Världsboken to exquisite map packs, this expansion is perfect for players seeking to elevate their tabletop sessions to a whole new level of complexity and detail. Is this massive expansion the right fit for your next adventure? Read on to discover if Ereb Altor is worth the investment for your gaming table.

As I have mentioned several times in various reviews, Drakar och Demoner is and remains my favorite role-playing game. Not only because it was the first RPG I played and the one that introduced me to the entire genre, but because Drakar och Demoner is incredibly flexible and the world is gargantuan.

A substantial expansion

Today’s review is about a substantial expansion for Drakar och Demoner, so you will also need the base game; otherwise, it won’t work.

Kopparhavet – content and scope

Ereb Altor: Kopparhavet is a solid box containing two books: Kopparhavskrönikan at 248 pages and Hjältar från Kopparhavet at 117 pages. Together, they provide everything you need to know as a Game Master to take your players to an entirely new world.

Campaign world and rule expansion

Ereb Altor is an extensive campaign world and rule expansion for Drakar och Demoner (DoD), originally developed during the heyday of Äventyrsspel. The books expand the DoD core system with geography, cultural models, magic theory, and role-playing mechanics adapted for a more simulation-oriented playstyle. The technical value lies in how Ereb Altor modularizes the world: every region, culture, and conflict is designed as a playable node that can be integrated into the DoD rule system without creating mechanical conflicts.

The Game Master’s work

As a Game Master, you have a fair amount of work ahead of you, because this is truly not something you jump into unprepared. I experienced this firsthand when I introduced it during a gaming session. It is by no means difficult, but you need to be thorough and not take shortcuts.

Map material as a complement

A great complement to Ereb Altor is the Världskartan pack, which contains very detailed and well-crafted maps of the area. With these, it is clearly easier for players to visualize where they are going and where they have been.

Världsboken – the crowning achievement

Ereb Altor: Världsboken at 182 pages is the crowning achievement. The book is aimed at both Game Masters and players as it goes into detail about how the world is structured and all its inhabitants. There are detailed character descriptions and tables for absolutely everything.

For those who want more

Ereb Altor is perfect for those who want more of a good thing, who want the opportunity to expand their gaming sessions to a whole new level.

Price and availability

Is there anything negative then? Not really from a technical standpoint; everything is very well-written, and it’s easy to get an overview. But that doesn’t mean it’s quick to absorb everything; it takes a few sessions and plenty of leafing through the books before you feel completely comfortable with all the new content.

The PDF versions of Ereb Altor are around 500 SEK, and if you’re buying the physical edition, it costs a bit over 800 SEK. The expansion thus costs as much as an entirely new game. That doesn’t include Ereb Altor: Världsboken, which is an additional 500 SEK, and if you want the maps as well, that’s nearly another 300 SEK. Of course, you don’t have to buy everything at once, but it ends up being quite a hefty sum in the end.

Recommendation

In summary, I want to recommend Ereb Altor: Kopparhavet, as it truly is an immensely well-crafted supplement to Drakar och Demoner. I cannot give it a “must-have” rating for two reasons. Firstly, Ereb Altor is not a must to be able to play Drakar och Demoner; it is merely an expansion, so in other words, not everyone needs to have it. Secondly, I feel the price tag might be a bit too steep.
