Review: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – The Order of Giants (DLC)

by Henric Brandt

In the DLC Indiana Jones – The Order of Giants, we get to meet Indy in a brand new adventure in Rome’s catacombs. It takes us deep into Rome’s underworld in search of a legendary giant crusader. We encounter new characters, explore new locations, and face quite a few tricky new puzzles.

A standalone adventure in Rome

Indiana Jones – The Order of Giants is a standalone side story, approximately four to five hours long, that takes place entirely in Rome; so unlike the main game, we stay in the same city the whole time. A huge advantage of the DLC is that you can access it without having to play through the entire main game first. You do, however, need to play enough to obtain your camera. After the first major cat-mummy mission, you can go and meet the character who gives you the quest.

How the DLC works with the main game

The clever thing is that the DLC works just as well played alongside the main adventure as it does playing it afterward. Personally, I experienced both scenarios. After I had completed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle I received the DLC for review, so I sought out the character and embarked on the adventure.

Bugs and issues during gameplay

When I had almost finished everything, I was a bit inattentive and chose to travel back to other locations to continue searching for secrets, thereby not proceeding to the next step in the DLC. At that point, the game crashed and I got stuck in a loop that I never got out of. I didn’t discover it until after I had run around so much that I had overwritten my save games, and I was therefore unable to get back to where I was.

I hoped until the very end that a patch would be released so I could move forward and back again, but it didn’t happen. Since the autosave function had overwritten my other saves, I had to replay the original game long enough to be able to restart the adventure again. Highly irritating. Luckily, this is one of my favorite games, so replaying everything wasn’t the worst thing I’ve done in my life, but it was very frustrating to fall at the finish line.

In another sequence during the replay, the game crashed again and I had to replay from my last save game. No big deal, but I haven’t had any other game crash on my Xbox Series X, so it makes me a bit sad.

Overall Impression

Otherwise, Indiana Jones – The Order of Giants is just as well-made and wonderful as the original game. It features the same performance and the same masterful sound design with a perfect Troy Baker as Indiana Jones. The DLC is included in Xbox Game Pass, but if you want to buy it for the original game, you’ll have to pay around 200 SEK. The DLC focuses mostly on puzzle-solving and not so much on grandiose scenes, but it is still fun to play and great to use your “little grey cells” to progress in the adventure.

In summary, I still want to recommend Indiana Jones – The Order of Giants, as it’s always fun to experience more of this game. Had it not been for the irritating bugs, the rating would have been a clear “must-play,” just like the original game.
