Sennheiser boasts a distinguished lineage of open-back headphones, commencing in 1968 with the HD-414 model \u2013 a legendary set that, with over ten million units sold, holds the title of best-selling headphones of all time. Subsequent development has yielded several classics, including the HD-650 and HD-600<\/strong>, which will be the focus of this review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HD-600 debuted in 1997 and remains a relevant headphone for audiophiles and music producers. A cosmetic update was implemented in 2019, but the core HD-600 experience is purported to remain consistent. Our objective is to evaluate this enduring “magic” and assess how the HD-600 compares against contemporary alternatives in its class. What are its defining characteristics? What continues to generate interest, 25 years after its initial release? We aim to uncover these qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall Sennheiser HD-600<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The packaging is minimalist. The contents include only the headphones themselves. No carrying case or alternative cable is provided, which is a notable omission. This lack of accessories creates a somewhat underwhelming initial impression. The option to switch to a shorter cable or securely transport the headphones would be expected at this price point and could have been incorporated during the 2019 design refresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The included cable terminates in a 3.5 mm connector with an adapter to 6.3 mm. This is less ideal than the HD-650’s configuration of a direct 6.3 mm connector with a 3.5 mm adapter, which is preferable for users primarily utilizing a DAC or external sound card. The HD-600, with its 300-ohm impedance, presents a middle ground in terms of amplification requirements. Its sensitivity of 102 dB implies that mobile phones may struggle to drive it effectively, while tablets may offer a more suitable experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial fit is somewhat snug, but with slight loosening of the headband over time, comfort becomes excellent. The headphones weigh 253 grams without the cable, resulting in a barely perceptible presence on the head. The HD-600 is exceptionally comfortable, readily facilitating extended listening sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A defining characteristic of the HD-600 is its emphasis on clear and balanced mid-range frequencies, contrasting with the excessive bass and treble emphasis often found in competing products. High frequencies (High-range)<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The HD-600 exhibits frequency extension up to 40.5 kHz. High frequencies are reproduced with clarity and palpable detail, without exhibiting harshness or causing listening fatigue. In Agnes Obel’s \u2013 Famili\u00e4r<\/em>, the nuanced articulations and intimate details are rendered with precision. This track highlights the balanced integration of the highest frequencies with the upper mid-range. Sibilance is present but controlled, retaining sharpness without becoming strident. The attacks on the acoustic guitar in the intro to Alan Jackson’s \u2013 Drive<\/em> are reproduced with exceptional definition and clarity, providing a genuinely pleasing experience without excessive emphasis. Precision is key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mid frequencies (Mid-range)<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As previously mentioned, the mid-range performance is noteworthy. The acoustic presentation can be so captivating that it demands complete focus, effectively interrupting other cognitive activities. This immersive quality is combined with a smooth and expansive character that encourages prolonged listening. However, this is not achieved through exaggeration; the mid-range seamlessly integrates with the high and low frequencies, enhancing rather than overshadowing them. The overall effect is a cohesive and natural sonic landscape, creating a truly engaging experience that is difficult to adequately articulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Low frequencies (Low-range)<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The HD-600’s lower frequency extension reaches 12 Hz, which, on paper, may appear less impressive compared to other headphones that extend to 4 or 5 Hz. However, does this translate into a discernible difference in audio quality? Not demonstrably. To critically assess the HD-600’s low-frequency performance, we evaluated William Orbit’s \u2013 Raphael<\/em>. The bass frequencies in this track are so low that they are barely audible on some headphones, requiring significant volume to be perceived. The HD-600, however, delivers a respectable performance. To evaluate power and impact, we transitioned to Michael McCann’s \u2013 Watchtower<\/em>. The full frequency range is represented, although lacking some of the visceral impact experienced at live concerts. While not sluggish, the low-end response stops short of fully replicating the physical sensation of pressure. Alok & Alan Walker’s \u2013 Headlights<\/em> delivers a clear and energetic bass presentation, without any perceived deficiencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overall soundstage<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Analyzing each frequency range individually provides a granular understanding of the overall soundstage. However, it is in the cohesive integration of these elements that the HD-600 truly excels. While no single frequency range dominates, the overall sonic presentation is remarkably balanced and refined. The headphones exhibit versatility across various musical genres, immersing the listener in the intricacies of the music, encouraging exploration of subtle details and fostering emotional engagement. The soundstage is vibrant, inviting, detailed, and expansive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
