How much money have you actually poured into your home office over the last few years? Like us at the editorial office, you’ve probably spent thousands on ergonomic chairs, height-adjustable desks, and razor-sharp monitors to optimize your workday. But when the autumn darkness creeps in during the afternoon, we still sit there in the gloom. We lean forward and squint at the screen’s blinding light like newly awakened moles, with a pounding headache and tired eyes as an inevitable consequence. Lighting is undoubtedly the most overlooked detail of the workplace. The market is dominated by premium brands that sometimes charge exorbitant prices for their desk lamps, but the challenger Quntis claims to have cracked the code for the budget segment. We have tested the Quntis Monitor Light Bar Focus to see if you can actually get decent lighting without breaking the bank.

Design, installation, and cable management

Out of the box, it’s a liberatingly simple and straightforward experience. Quntis has created a product that is easy to install. The fixture itself is matte black, discreet, and blends in on most desks. The lamp uses a smart and adaptable counterweight solution that seems to be industry standard and makes it fit more or less all monitors. You simply fold out the clip, hang it over the top edge of the monitor, and let the weight on the back secure it. It grips stably and doesn’t take up a single square centimeter of your valuable screen real estate.

However, when we go to plug in the lamp and power it up, we encounter a small but clearly notable obstacle. Power is supplied via USB, and the included cable is smartly designed with a 90-degree angle at the end so it doesn’t stick straight up and look unsightly. The problem? The cable generally feels quite cheap, a bit too stiff, and above all, far too short. If your computer monitor happens to have built-in, available USB ports on the back, this short length is just right and provides an incredibly clean installation. However, our test monitors lacked available ports, which meant we had to run the cable all the way down to the computer on the floor. It was an unnecessary puzzle that required us to pull out an ugly extension cord. A slightly more generous cable length would have been appreciated.

Light distribution and ergonomics

Once the lamp is on and we lean back, we quickly forget the cables. The brightness is really, really good. Quntis Monitor Light Bar Focus works with asymmetrical optics, which in plain English means it casts light downwards and forwards across the workspace and keyboard, without reflecting off the computer screen itself and blinding you.

We also want to take the opportunity to praise Quntis’ restraint. At a time when every other desk gadget must be equipped with flashing rainbow colors, this lamp is completely free of unnecessary RGB nonsense. Here, the focus is on pure productivity and a mature aesthetic.

Best of all are the customization options for the light itself. You can easily direct the light beam by angling the bar slightly forward or backward, and the lighting can be dimmed steplessly exactly as you want it. The most pleasant feature, and something you can’t always expect in this price range, is the ability to adjust the warmth of the light (Kelvin). Being able to crank up an ice-cold, crisp white light when you need extreme focus for your notes and Excel sheets, only to later in the evening dim it down to a soft, amber glow while reading a book at your desk, is absolutely spot on. It does wonders for the eyes and drastically reduces fatigue.

The Remote Control

All this magic is controlled via the included wireless remote, which you place on your desk like a small hockey puck. Not having to reach up over the screen and fumble for touch buttons every time the light needs adjusting is incredibly convenient. You use the puck’s buttons to adjust brightness or temperature. The remote does its job well and responds well, but tactually, it leaves something to be desired. It feels a bit hollow and plasticky when you handle it.

Another detail that hints at the low price tag is that the remote is powered by standard, replaceable batteries. Sure, a set of batteries will probably last a very long time in a device like this, but in a perfect (and more environmentally friendly) world, we would have liked to see the puck be rechargeable via USB-C. It’s not a disaster for functionality, but a small minus in today’s sustainable tech era.

Conclusion

We began by asking ourselves why we spend huge sums on office chairs and monitors but leave the lighting itself to chance. We have accepted the headaches and squinting because the premium options on the market felt unnecessarily expensive. After working with the Quntis Monitor Light Bar Focus, the answer is crystal clear: there is no longer any excuse to sit in the dark.

Overall, this is a genuinely good product that is extremely difficult to find cheaper elsewhere with the same functionality. It outclasses competitors from major brands when looking at pure value for money. Sure, you have to live with compromises like a slightly plasticky, battery-powered remote and a power cord that’s a bit too short and stiff. But for those with a standard home office, or for a student who isn’t too picky and wants to stop squinting over course literature in the evenings, this is a completely brilliant purchase. If you want a few more features and a sleeker product, you can instead look at the Aether Monitor Light Bar that we took a look at last spring, but be prepared to pay three times as much. With the Quntis Monitor Light Bar Focus, you get pleasant lighting that spares your eyes, a clean desk surface, and full control over color temperature, all without breaking the budget.
