Now it’s time to test their latest flagship watch running Wear OS, namely the Xiaomi Watch 5. On paper, it looks really promising: a large battery capacity, premium materials, a brand-new EMG sensor, and the latest Wear OS. But does it go all the way, and how does it stack up against our reference model, the OnePlus Watch 3? Let’s find out!

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you notice is that the Xiaomi Watch 5 is large. The case measures 47 x 47 mm, is 12.3 mm thick, and weighs a whopping 56 grams without the strap. This actually makes it both larger and heavier than both the OnePlus Watch 3 (49.7 grams) and the Huawei Watch GT 6 (51.3 grams). This is not a watch for someone with a slender wrist; it requires a bit of size to look balanced.

Not for those with small wrists. Photo: Senses.se

That being said, it is an incredibly well-built watch. The case is made of 316L stainless steel and the glass is sapphire crystal on both sides, including over the heart rate sensor on the underside. The feel in the hand is premium throughout; this is truly solid and there is no creaking or play anywhere. The design is attractive, but at the same time quite generic. If you take it off and place it next to a handful of other round smartwatches, you might not find the right one on your first try.

Photo: Senses.se

On the side, there is a rotating crown that you can both turn and press, as well as an extra button that is mapped to workouts but can be changed. The included strap is a soft fluororubber band with a 22 mm quick-release fastener, and if you don’t like the one provided, it’s easy to swap. Sleeping and exercising with the watch works perfectly fine, even though you are certainly aware that you have a substantial piece on your wrist.

The watch is rated at 5ATM, which means it’s fine for showering and swimming, but not for diving. Something that surprises me, however, is that Xiaomi does not state any IP rating at all, which is a bit odd for a premium product like this. Most competitors have a clear IP certification, so I would have liked to see Xiaomi be equally clear about what the watch can actually withstand in terms of dust and water jets.

Display

Photo: Senses.se

The screen is a 1.54-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 480 x 480 and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Peak brightness reaches 1,500 nits, and in practice, it’s a really good screen. The colors are nice, the text is sharp, and it’s excellent to read in most situations. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of the brightest panels we’ve seen, it’s not something you miss in everyday use. There is also support for Always-On Display if you want the watch face to be constantly lit.

Photo: Senses.se

One detail worth highlighting is how the screen meets the case. The bezel around the panel is down to 2.6 mm, which is very thin and means the screen occupies a large part of the front without any significant dead space around the edge. Looking closely, you can also see that the glass isn’t just a flat pane on top. The screen surface itself is flat, but along the outer edge runs a distinct bevel—a polished edge that angles down toward the case. Beneath it sits a narrow, mirror-polished steel ring that is slightly raised against the brushed steel of the case wall below.

This is a small detail that is barely noticeable until you hold the watch in your hand and turn it toward the light. The bevel makes the transition between glass and steel feel smoother when you swipe your finger in from the side, and it catches the light in a way that gives the watch a touch of traditional watchmaking. The contrast between the polished ring and the brushed case is also nicely executed.

One small thing that was slightly annoying at times was the automatic brightness, which sometimes seems to have a mind of its own and doesn’t always keep up when moving between bright and dark environments. Not a major issue, but worth mentioning.

Performance and Battery Life

Photo: Senses.se

Just like the OnePlus Watch 3, the Xiaomi Watch 5 is built on a dual-chip solution. There is a powerful Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 (4 nm) for heavier tasks, and a significantly more efficient BES2800BP chip that handles background functions and basic operation. This is paired with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.

This works seamlessly in practice, and you rarely notice when the watch switches between the two chips. The menus feel snappy and app switching is fast.

It’s also worth mentioning the EMG sensor, which Xiaomi is keen to highlight. The Watch 5 is the first consumer watch to feature one, and it reads electrical signals in the muscles so you can control the watch with small hand movements, like pinching or snapping your fingers to reject a call. Exciting on paper, but in practice, it’s a gimmick. The gestures are far from always registered, and after a while, I simply stopped using them. Tellingly, the function is also turned off by default; you have to dig into the settings yourself to activate it, which makes it feel like Xiaomi themselves know it isn’t quite ready yet.

But the real headliner here is, of course, the battery life, and it is very good. Xiaomi promises up to six days in smart mode, and in my tests, I actually landed right around six days. That was with fairly heavy usage, including several GPS sessions per week, active notifications, and continuous health monitoring, but without the Always-On display enabled.

Software and Ecosystem

The Xiaomi Watch 5 runs the latest Wear OS 6 from Google, which means you get access to the entire Play Store, Google Wallet, Google Maps, and Google’s assistant Gemini right on your wrist. For power-saving mode, Xiaomi uses its own Vela OS in the background, but you never notice it.

All health and fitness data is collected in Xiaomi’s own Mi Fitness app, which is mandatory. The watch must be paired with Mi Fitness. The app itself works well and provides a clear overview of heart rate, sleep, stress, and workouts.

However, the data isn’t locked in the way you might first think. Mi Fitness can export to Google’s Health Connect, which in turn shares it with virtually any health app. You can also sync to services like Strava. and since this is a Wear OS watch with full access to the Play Store, you can install, for example, Strava directly on the watch and record your sessions there, completely separate from Xiaomi’s own app. This is one of the major advantages of running Wear OS instead of a proprietary system.

One thing worth mentioning, and which you should keep in mind, is the updates. Xiaomi has a mixed reputation when it comes to software support for its watches, and the history from the predecessors Watch 2 and Watch 2 Pro is that Wear OS updates arrived late and sporadically, well behind both Samsung and Google. Furthermore, Xiaomi has not communicated how many future Wear OS versions the Watch 5 is guaranteed to receive. The watch ships with Wear OS 6, but the next version is just around the corner, and the question is how quickly, and for how long, Xiaomi intends to keep the watch updated.

One thing that is important to be clear about: the Xiaomi Watch 5 works only with Android (8.0 and up). If you use an iPhone, you’ll have to look for another watch. This is not unique to this particular watch, but applies to all modern Wear OS watches, so the same would apply if you were looking at a Google Pixel Watch, a Samsung Galaxy Watch, or a OnePlus Watch. If you want a smartwatch that plays well with an iPhone, you simply have to look somewhere other than Wear OS.

Health and Fitness

Under the hood sits a substantial array of sensors: an optical heart rate sensor with four LEDs and four photodiodes, SpO2 for oxygen saturation, stress measurement, and a sleep sensor that also measures respiratory rate. There is a convenient 60-second health check that, with a single tap, measures heart rate, oxygen saturation, stress, and more all at once. For training, there are over 150 sport modes, VO2 Max, training load, and everything else you could wish for.

But, and this is the watch’s clearest drawback on the health side: there is no HRV measurement (heart rate variability). This is disappointing, as heart rate variability has become one of the more useful metrics for understanding recovery and stress, and it’s something available on significantly cheaper watches. The watch also lacks both ECG and a skin temperature sensor, the latter being something usually used for more accurate cycle tracking and nightly recovery data.

Regarding GPS, the watch supports dual frequency bands (L1+L5) and five different satellite systems. I have tested the positioning by walking, running, and cycling routes I know well, and compared it with other watches. Honestly, the result is not as precise as the best competitors. Both the OnePlus Watch 3 and especially the Huawei Watch GT 6 draw smoother and more precise tracks, especially in the city where the Xiaomi watch can waver a bit. That said, it locks onto position quickly and records sessions quite acceptably on the whole, so for the average exerciser, it is perfectly usable.

Sleep tracking is a chapter of its own. It works well fundamentally, capturing times and moments of wakefulness, but it isn’t entirely reliable. Sometimes it misses that I am actually lying awake, and on a couple of occasions, it registered that I was sleeping while I was actually just lounging on the couch in front of the TV. This is not unique to Xiaomi, but it is worse than most other watches I have tested.

The heart rate measurement itself, however, feels reliable and stays close to what I get from other watches during both walks and more intense sessions.

Charging

USB-A !? Photo: Senses.se

And then there’s the charger. The Xiaomi Watch 5 is charged with a magnetic charging puck that, for some unfathomable reason, ends in a USB-A connector. It is 2026, and we phased out USB-A a long time ago. I would have preferred either a USB-C port or at least a USB-C cable. There is also no support for Qi wireless charging, so it’s the puck or nothing.

The small consolation is that charging is relatively fast. A full charge takes about 90 minutes, and a short charge goes a long way: about ten minutes gives you a fifth of the battery, and half an hour gets you to roughly half full.

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Watch 5 is in many ways an impressive watch. The build quality is top-notch, the screen is great, performance is good, and above all, the battery life is nearly class-leading for a Wear OS watch.

But there are compromises, and they are worth taking seriously. The lack of HRV is disappointing, ECG and eSIM are completely missing, the EMG gestures feel more like a beta than a finished feature, and the GPS doesn’t quite reach the level of the best competitors. Sleep tracking is also a bit too shaky to fully rely on. Furthermore, its size means it won’t suit everyone.

And then there’s the price. The recommended price is 3,990 SEK, and honestly, that’s a pretty bold price tag for what you get. Those who want the most complete package, with ECG, HRV, and slightly more precise positioning, would still be wise to look at alternatives. But for the Android user who primarily wants a high-end, stylish watch with phenomenal battery life and the latest Wear OS, and who can live with the compromises above, the Xiaomi Watch 5 is a perfectly reasonable choice.

Xiaomi sent review units for this test.
