After we at Senses tested the Marshall Emberton III<\/a>, which we were very pleased with, we became more curious about how the larger speakers performed. Now we have had the opportunity to test the Marshall Kilburn III<\/em><\/strong>, a portable speaker that combines classic design with impressive sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you come across a product that feels well-thought-out even before you press the power button. The Marshall Kilburn III<\/strong> is such a speaker. It doesn’t just play music; it also becomes a natural part of the interior thanks to its characteristic appearance. The first thing that caught my attention was the design. Many portable speakers today have a rather anonymous design language, while the Kilburn III clearly carries Marshall’s classic heritage. The textured surface, the metal grille, and the iconic control knobs give the speaker a timeless feel that fits just as well in a modern home as in a more classic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I particularly appreciate the physical controls on the top. Being able to adjust volume, bass, and treble directly on the speaker provides a significantly more genuine feel than always having to use a mobile phone. The controls feel solid and contribute to the sense of quality that permeates the entire product. This is a speaker that is meant to be on display. Whether placed on a bookshelf, a coffee table, or out on the patio, it becomes a natural part of the environment rather than something you want to hide away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the music starts playing, it is quickly evident that Marshall has put as much care into the sound as into the design. The music maintains its balance even if you move around the speaker, making it just as enjoyable for quiet background listening as when several people gather to listen together. Examples of songs I have listened to in order to understand how well the Kilburn III<\/strong> performs in this regard include “I wont change for you – Engestad”, “Hail the apocalypse – Avatar”, and “Heaven on your mind – Kygo”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technically, the Kilburn III is built around a speaker system where multiple drivers work together to reproduce the entire sound spectrum effectively. This is complemented by two 2-inch full-range drivers responsible for the midrange and treble, where vocals, guitars, pianos, and other details are reproduced with clarity and precision. By allowing each driver to operate within the frequency range where it performs best, the speaker avoids compromising on sound quality. Instead of a single driver trying to reproduce the entire soundscape, the work is divided, which contributes to better instrument separation, a more open sound, and a more natural impression. For me, it is primarily the overall package that makes the Kilburn III<\/strong> so successful. It looks fantastic, feels solid in the hands, and delivers a sound that makes it hard to stop listening. It is a speaker that is just as suitable for everyday listening as for social occasions, showing that Marshall still knows how to combine style, function, and sound quality in a single product. The only things preventing the Kilburn III<\/strong> from receiving a perfect score are the price and the choice of an IP54 rating instead of IP67, like the JBL Charge 6<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
