How do you actually value your own time? It is a question we at the editorial office have been mulling over for the past few weeks. We have had the privilege of rolling out the red carpet for Dreame L50s Pro Ultra<\/a>, a really good robot vacuum cleaner that promises to automate our everyday lives at a level we previously only dreamed of. Not quite at the same flagship level as the Dreame X60 Ultra<\/a> that we tested last spring, but considerably cheaper.
There are tech enthusiasts, and then there are those who just want technology to work silently in the background. We mere mortals usually only scratch the surface when we clean, all in a desperate attempt to save a few minutes in the daily puzzle of life. So, can a machine really replace that analog, hands-on feeling of a freshly scrubbed floor? And above all: how does it handle reality’s absolutely messiest challenges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Impressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing that strikes you when unpacking Dreame’s new flagship is the size. The base station undoubtedly claims its fair share of floor space\u2014it is as large as a substantial wastepaper basket. But let’s be blunt; that is more or less standard for this type of self-driving premium machine that needs to accommodate dual water tanks and integrated vacuum bags. Fortunately, the design is clean, minimalist, and blends in unexpectedly well among Scandinavian furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The robot itself exudes build quality. It feels extremely robust, and we found no creaking plastic. However, we encountered a compromise early on. The robot is simply a bit too tall. Unlike Dreame’s most expensive models, where the radar tower (LiDAR) on top can be lowered to allow the machine to sneak under low furniture, the tower on the L50s Pro Ultra is static. A hot tip is therefore to measure the clearance under your sofa before you click the buy button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleaning & Mopping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If we’re talking performance, one word almost suffices: Wow<\/em>. It is a somewhat magical experience to sit on the couch and watch this machine work. With a completely bizarre suction power of 30,000 Pa, it sucks up dust and gravel from carpets as if there were no tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is the mopping that truly makes us smile. To stress-test the system, we sacrificed a sticky milkshake directly onto the kitchen floor. We all know how that usually goes: you pull out the paper towels, then the floor mop, and then you have to scrub with all your might. With Dreame, it was a completely different story. It glided forward, extended its rotating mops (which, thanks to MopExtend technology, are pushed out to reach all the way to the baseboards), and genuinely wiped away the stain. When it was done, there wasn’t a trace of our little dairy disaster. Furthermore, it avoids obstacles masterfully. The AI navigation and camera identify forgotten cables, Lego bricks, and shoes, and the robot dances smoothly around them with impressive precision. Sometimes almost too well, as rooms with very messy floors containing Lego bricks and train sets result in the robot barely cleaning there at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A smart home product often falls flat if the app is glitchy, but here Dreame delivers. The app is, quite simply, excellent. It is intuitive, snappy, and the barrier to entry is minimal. At the same time, we quickly noticed how deep into the settings you can actually delve. You can micromanage exactly how thoroughly specific rooms should be cleaned, with how much water and what suction power should apply to each individual zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unexpectedly geeky detail is the ability to remotely control the robot manually and watch live through the camera in the front. Perfect for anyone who suddenly panics at the office about whether the stove is on or if the hall light is burning\u2014now you can just drive the robot out and check. Being able to call out to your robot and ask it to clean a specific room is also quite handy if, for example, you are in the middle of cooking with messy hands and don’t want to take your phone out of your pocket!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, however, a couple of snags. Dreame more or less locks you into its own ecosystem when it comes to consumables. For the station to dose correctly and function optimally, you are required to use their own cleaning solution. A bit disappointing for those who want the freedom to buy their favorite soap at the nearest Ica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After cleaning, the next job begins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The battery capacity is generous; the machine easily tackles large, open-plan layouts on a single charge. But what we really must highlight is what happens after the cleaning is finished.
When the robot returns to the station to empty the dust, it runs a wash of the mops with 100-degree hot water. The result is indisputable: the mops become sparkling clean, and the extreme temperature works wonders against ingrained dirt and bacteria. The downside? This whole process takes quite some time. After the bath, the mops must also be hot-air dried to prevent mold and unpleasant odors. Consequently, the machine stands there humming for a good while after the floors are done. If you’re not home, it doesn’t matter at all, but if you start it late in the evening, the fan noise from the drying process can become a noticeable annoyance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We began by asking how one values their time. Buying a Dreame L50s Pro Ultra is not really about buying a household appliance; it’s about buying a promise of a slightly more frictionless everyday life.
The price is definitely steep. With a price tag just under ten thousand kronor, it will certainly scare off some potential buyers. Sure, we wished the laser tower could be retracted, and yes, it requires some patience with the extended humming of the drying process. But the more we have lived with it, the more we realize what a brilliant time-saver it is. Seeing it tackle dried-on milkshake stains and navigate among socks with a surgeon’s precision is worth a lot to those who want to avoid spending their weekends vacuuming. You are simply buying back your own time\u2014and suddenly, cleaning the floors actually feels a bit magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
