We previously reviewed the predecessor to this camera, the Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera<\/strong><\/a>, and found it to be satisfactory. However, we noted some areas for improvement, including the absence of USB-C, a somewhat cumbersome installation process, and a relatively weak built-in siren. This review will assess whether Arlo has addressed these concerns and explore any other distinguishing features of the new model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ll begin with the installation process. The cameras require charging before setup, and we were pleased to find they now incorporate USB-C. Initial charging takes approximately one hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once charged, installation is initiated via the Arlo app. Unlike earlier Arlo devices, the new Essential series utilizes Bluetooth, resulting in a streamlined installation process. From unboxing and charging to completing the installation, the process is remarkably quick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s important to note that integrating the new Essential series into an existing Arlo ecosystem will upgrade the system to the latest Arlo interface within the app. However, not all legacy Arlo devices are compatible<\/em> with this update. Specifically, users with Arlo Go, Arlo Security Light, or Arlo Bridge<\/a> devices may encounter compatibility issues with the new Arlo Secure 4.0 interface. During installation, a warning message may appear, indicating that certain devices are not “currently supported,” as exemplified by the Door Chime 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Door Chime 2 continued to function without issue under Arlo Secure 4.0 during our testing, the warning likely pertains to the lack of future firmware updates. This could be communicated more clearly by Arlo. Aside from this point, the installation process is straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camera is mounted using a simple bracket. One component is easily screwed onto the camera, while the other attaches to the wall. The camera then clicks into the bracket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key consideration is that the camera utilizes a non-removable battery. Consequently, when recharging is required, a lengthy USB-C cable must be connected, or the entire camera detached. Removing the camera can be challenging due to the secure mounting, which, while inconvenient for charging, also provides resistance against potential theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system’s management app is user-friendly, facilitating easy switching between home and away modes, as well as the creation of automated routines triggered by motion detection. A complimentary 60-day trial of Arlo Secure is included upon installation. After the trial period, a subscription costs 49 SEK\/month for a single camera or 129 SEK\/month for up to four cameras. Given that the Essential series lacks local recording capabilities, a subscription is essentially required to maximize the system’s functionality. Without a subscription, users are limited to receiving motion-triggered notifications and accessing live view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Image quality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now, let’s examine the image quality. We positioned a camera in a relatively dark basement and simulated a break-in using a staff member to evaluate the available modes. Various night vision settings are offered, including options to activate the built-in spotlight, utilize infrared (resulting in black and white footage), or disable night mode altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
