It has been a year since our review of Google’s first smartwatch available in Sweden, the Google Pixel Watch 2<\/strong><\/a>. While we were generally satisfied, there were opportunities for improvement. Now, we examine its successor, the Google Pixel Watch 3<\/strong>, specifically the larger 45mm model, to determine if it warrants an upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Size matters?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Upon unboxing, the similarities between the two models are immediately apparent, clearly identifying them as part of the same product line. The most significant visual distinction is the size. Acknowledging user feedback, Google has released the Pixel Watch 3 in two sizes this year. Our previous review noted that the smaller size was adequate, easily fitting under sleeves. While this year’s model is larger, it avoids the bulkiness of many dedicated fitness watches and still generally fits comfortably under a cuff. This increased size brings several advantages, which we will explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Screen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The screen’s brightness is a notable improvement over its predecessor, extending beyond specifications. The difference is significant in direct sunlight, making the screen easily readable even with sunglasses, a previous challenge with the Pixel Watch 2. A larger screen also facilitates quick information access, reducing the need for scrolling. While we were satisfied with the Pixel Watch 2’s screen, transitioning to the larger Pixel Watch 3 makes it difficult to revert to a smaller display due to the improved efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n

Battery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Battery life was a primary concern in our Pixel Watch 2 review, with it typically lasting only a single day, especially when tracking workouts. While it charged rapidly, this was contingent on having access to a charger. The larger Pixel Watch 3 demonstrates a marked improvement in battery performance. After two full days, including sleep tracking, approximately 20% of the battery remained on the morning of the third day. Charging each morning allows for a continuous two-day usage cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training with Pixel Watch 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following Google’s acquisition of Fitbit<\/strong><\/a>, Pixel watches now leverage Fitbit’s extensive experience and software for training and health analysis. We evaluated the Pixel Watch 3 during a run to assess any differences compared to its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial assessment revealed no significant differences for experienced Pixel Watch 2 users, both during the session and within the detailed data available in the Fitbit app afterward. This is not a negative point, as we have been consistently pleased with its performance. However, with further testing, the improved screen readability became apparent during runs, with both increased brightness and screen area contributing to easier data viewing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most significant improvement was the battery life. After a one-hour run with GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring, and Spotify, battery consumption was approximately 25%. While this may not be exceptional for Garmin<\/strong> users, it represents a substantial improvement for the Pixel Watch, as the Pixel Watch 2 consumed 50% during a comparable session. This improvement eliminates the need to bring a charger for lunchtime workouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also tested the new custom running session feature, where the Pixel Watch 3 maintains the user’s pace. This engaging feature transformed a routine run into a more interactive experience. A minor drawback is the somewhat artificial-sounding robot voice; the option to customize it would be beneficial. For dedicated athletes, Google has incorporated AI-driven training session recommendations. These are interesting, although they are similar to features offered by competitors such as Garmin. The long-term evolution of this function, as the Pixel Watch 3 accumulates more user data, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While larger and more expensive, the Pixel Watch 3 offers improvements. Google has addressed key concerns regarding battery life and screen size. The extended battery life and the larger screen enhance the overall user experience. However, the price for the 45mm, 4G-enabled model is substantial. We recommend considering the 45mm Wi-Fi-only version as a more cost-effective alternative. Furthermore, compatibility is currently limited to Halebop, Telenor, and Telia, which would make the 4G functionality redundant for users on other networks. Despite some limitations, our editorial team is pleased with the Pixel Watch 3 and recommends it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
