The beauty tech and personal care market is evolving at a breakneck pace, and features previously reserved for flagship models are now gradually making their way down to the mid-range segment. Panasonic Series 500 ES-RM3FX<\/strong> is clear proof of this. This is a foil shaver that promises a lot on paper \u2013 Japanese steel, a 10D flexible shaver head, and \u2013 believe it or not \u2013 finally, standardized USB-C charging. But how does it hold up in the daily morning routine and against the old flagship Panasonic ES-LV9U<\/a><\/strong>? We have put it to the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right as I pick up the ES-RM3FX from the packaging, I am struck by how incredibly light and sleek it is. The chassis weighs a mere 146 grams, making it exceptionally easy to handle and saving the wrist during shaving. The ergonomics are top-notch; the casing has a good grip and feels neither plasticky nor fragile, despite its feather-light form factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shaving experience itself is largely as good as one has come to expect from Panasonic. The company loves to draw parallels in its marketing to its traditions of forging samurai swords, but beneath the surface, the 30-degree, nano-polished inner blades made of genuine, high-quality steel generally deliver an incredibly close shave.<\/sup> Along with the flexible shaver head, it cuts stubble precisely and gently on cheeks and larger, flat surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major weakness, however, is that the device still performs noticeably worse on the neck and around the chin. In these more complex and angled areas, it has to struggle significantly more, and I am forced to go over the same area repeatedly to catch all the stubborn hairs, which unfortunately leads to some unnecessary friction and irritated skin. Overall, the machine performs best on daily or at most two-day stubble. If you have let the beard grow longer than that, the motor’s 26,000 cross-cutting actions have to work far too hard. One comfort is that the device is IPX7-rated, meaning it works just as well in the shower with shaving gel as it does dry in front of the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What really wins my heart this time is the power supply. The fact that Panasonic has finally scrapped the outdated, proprietary charging adapters you have to hunt for in favor of a USB-C port is a stroke of genius. It means one less bulky cable in the suitcase \u2013 you can now charge the shaver with the exact same cable you use for your phone or laptop. A full charge takes one hour to achieve and provides about 45 minutes of runtime, which in practice is enough for several weeks of morning routines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also good for peace and quiet at home to avoid the large dock that sounded like an angry engine after every shave with the Panasonic ES-LV9U (which is also a heavier and less ergonomic piece). Now you just wash the device with soap and water, and that’s that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not everything is completely flawless. To keep the price tag down and the size slim, Panasonic has made a significant compromise: they have completely removed the classic, pop-up precision trimmer on the back. If you want to tidy up your sideburns or shorten a slightly longer beard before going in with the foil, you must use a completely separate trimmer. Another potential point of irritation arises on the day it’s time to replace the consumables. Buying a new set of the outer foil and inner blades (WES9087 and WES9068) can cost up to 650 SEK in Sweden. This represents an unreasonably high percentage of the original price, considering you can often find a brand-new ES-RM3FX in stores for just under a thousand kronor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Panasonic Series 500 ES-RM3FX is a stylish, lightweight, and extremely travel-friendly shaver that provides a very good, close-to-skin result on flat surfaces. Unfortunately, it loses significant efficiency around the neck and chin, which brings down the otherwise strong rating. If you can live without a built-in trimmer and accept that you’ll have to spend a little extra time on the neck contours, this is still a decent upgrade for your gym bag \u2013 thanks in large part to the convenient USB-C charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
