We have previously reviewed the Watch S4<\/strong><\/a> from Xiaomi. This review will therefore focus on my initial experience with a smartwatch, alongside an examination of the distinctions between the different models.<\/p>\n

First Impressions<\/h3>\n

My initial serious consideration of a smartwatch arose during the testing of smart rings<\/strong><\/a>. My previous reluctance was somewhat nebulous, beyond a general predisposition against adopting new wearable tech, perhaps influenced by a generational perspective. Nevertheless, I approached the concept with an open mind for this review.<\/p>\n

For this review, I thoroughly tested the Watch S4 (41 mm)<\/strong>, the more compact variant, which differs from its larger counterpart in both dimensions and certain functionalities. Upon unboxing, it presents a surprisingly solid impression despite its smaller form factor. Its design is notably simpler and sleeker than the larger model. While personally I might prefer the larger model, the white strap on my review unit proved less practical for my professional activities, quickly showing marks. Fortunately, the Watch S4 is available in various colors and designs, and its straps are easily interchangeable.<\/p>\n

Installation and Use<\/h3>\n

The watch arrives largely pre-charged, negating the immediate need for a power connection. Upon downloading the Mi Fitness<\/strong> app, I encountered a familiar challenge with Xiaomi’s account registration; the interface initially defaulted to Chinese, reminiscent of my experience with the X20+ robot vacuum cleaner<\/strong><\/a>. Fortunately, I soon recalled possessing an existing Xiaomi account, which allowed me to bypass the registration process.<\/p>\n

Upon successful login, users gain access to the watch’s full suite of features. The application clearly delineates settings that can accelerate battery depletion, providing explicit warning texts. This transparency is a significant advantage, empowering users to make informed decisions regarding feature activation and its impact on battery longevity.<\/p>\n

The charging dock is compact and practical; however, as only a single unit is provided, it’s essential to carry it when traveling to avoid power depletion. Additionally, a dedicated battery-saver mode displays only the time, significantly extending its operational duration.<\/p>\n

Features<\/h3>\n

Regarding functionality, the Watch S4 offers an extensive array of features, highly customizable to individual user needs. It includes a plethora of training settings, measuring key metrics such as blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, stress levels, heart rate, step count, and many more.<\/p>\n

Users can conveniently read and reply to SMS messages, initiate calls, and conduct conversations directly through the watch. I thoroughly tested the call function, finding the audio quality remarkably clear, with recipients reporting no issues with clarity. While these features are relatively standard across many smartwatches, for a first-time user, their seamless integration and performance were particularly impressive.<\/p>\n

Standard functionalities also include activity reminders, prompting users to move after prolonged periods of inactivity. It accurately tracks running distance and workout results, and offers full music control, allowing users to change tracks and adjust volume \u2013 demonstrating comprehensive functionality across these domains.<\/p>\n

Extra Details<\/h3>\n

A notable, albeit minor, feature I appreciated is the watch’s flashlight capability. While the primary function simply illuminates the display in white, the flashing mode provides enhanced utility. This significantly enhances user visibility from a considerable distance when navigating dark roads, a particularly beneficial aspect in dimly lit environments such as rural areas.<\/p>\n

The comprehensive sleep analysis feature also proved valuable. It provides detailed insights into sleep stages, including the percentage of deep sleep, the number of awakenings, and total sleep duration. The system maintains historical statistics and offers personalized tips for improving sleep quality.<\/p>\n

Differences Between Models<\/h3>\n

Beyond physical dimensions, the primary differentiator between the smaller 41 mm model and the larger 47 mm variant lies in battery life. The 41 mm model offers approximately eight days of autonomy (with all battery-intensive features disabled), compared to 15 days for the larger model. This represents nearly a twofold reduction in autonomy, a notable disparity given the relatively modest size difference.<\/p>\n

The larger model also boasts enhanced GPS performance and additional advanced functionalities.<\/p>\n

In summary, the 41 mm model remains a commendable choice, performing its intended functions reliably. While its smart functionality aligns with industry standards rather than offering groundbreaking innovations, its performance is solid.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the selection between models hinges on which version best aligns with individual preferences and requirements. The larger model offers extended battery life and additional features, whereas the 41 mm variant is exceptionally light at 32 grams, providing a more agile feel on the wrist. While some users may prefer a more substantial watch, the final choice is largely a matter of personal preference. <\/p>\n
