Scales remain a relevant tool, particularly during periods of health and fitness focus. However, modern smart scales offer functionalities extending beyond simple weight measurement, providing a more comprehensive overview of your health. We previously reviewed the Withings Body Comp<\/a><\/strong>, and were generally impressed. Now, we evaluate the Withings Body Scan<\/strong>, which boasts several enhancements over its predecessor.<\/p>\n

Withings continues to excel in product packaging. The unboxing experience reflects a commitment to premium quality. The Body Scan arrives in a manageable box, revealing a sleek, mirror-finished scale with patterned foot placement guides. New to this model is a retractable handle, designed for measuring nerve endings in the hands, a feature we will explore in detail.<\/p>\n

The package includes a small mounting unit with 3M adhesive for optional wall placement. While initially appearing practical for space-saving storage, the mount is specifically intended to hold the handle in an extended position for easier access. This may benefit users with limited mobility, but its overall utility for the general user base seems limited.<\/p>\n

Two immediate improvements are evident. Withings has replaced the magnetic plastic feet of the previous model \u2013 which were prone to detachment \u2013 with fixed plastic strips. Additionally, the scale now utilizes USB-C charging, eliminating the need for AA batteries. The inclusion of a color screen also enhances the user experience, although the previous monochrome display may have offered superior clarity.<\/p>\n

As with previous models, the device seamlessly connects to your smartphone via the Withings app. The setup process is straightforward, with the exception of the requirement for a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, which is increasingly uncommon. While some routers support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals, this requirement introduces unnecessary complexity. The software update necessitates proximity to the router. Data is subsequently organized within the app, which also automatically imports historical data from previous Withings devices.<\/p>\n

New Features: ECG, Water\/Bone Mass, and Abdominal Fat Analysis<\/h2>\n

The Withings app allows users to customize the displayed metrics. While the scale provides 16 different measurements, it can only display 15 simultaneously. While some metrics, such as weather forecast and air quality, may not be directly health-related, the limitation feels arbitrary. Displaying all available values should be feasible.<\/p>\n

This generation introduces ECG, water mass, and bone mass (as a ratio) measurements. The ECG function also detects potential atrial fibrillation (tested successfully on a user with diagnosed arrhythmia). The device also provides pulse rate and an improved arterial reading for vascular age and arterial elasticity. Measurements for arterial elasticity from the Body Scan were slightly lower than those from the Huawei Watch 4 Pro<\/a><\/strong> (assessing accuracy would require dedicated medical equipment, but the difference was minor at <5% deviation).<\/p>\n

The scale also measures visceral fat, which is a key indicator of health. Even individuals with relatively flat abdomens may have elevated levels of internal abdominal fat. Monitoring this metric can be beneficial, encouraging both increased physical activity and improved dietary habits.<\/p>\n

Withings Body Scan: Measurement Considerations<\/h2>\n

The “NHS” \u2013 Nerve Health Score<\/strong> \u2013 is a unique measurement developed by Withings. This metric, ranging from 0-100, assesses nerve function by sending an imperceptible impulse through the foot, stimulating sweat glands. It’s important to note that this feature is currently only approved in the EU. The interpretation of the results can be ambiguous. While a low NHS may indicate neuropathy<\/a>, the significance of values in the 70-80 range is less clear. Consultation with a general medicine specialist revealed unfamiliarity with the “nerve health” concept. While Withings boasts certification with numerous clinically validated biomarkers, the practical benefit and interpretation of the NHS require further clarification. Furthermore, the reading appears susceptible to fluctuations based on foot moisture levels. An initial unit experienced a 30-point drop within a week.<\/p>\n

This issue prompted us to evaluate Withings’ customer support, which proved to be excellent. Our unit was promptly replaced, revealing a potential defect in the original device. This also afforded us the opportunity to assess both color options, with a slight preference for the black model, although the white option may better complement bathrooms with similar decor.<\/p>\n

The Nerve Health Score is a somewhat unclear concept with potentially fluctuating measurements. Its clinical significance and modifiability require further investigation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Weighing and general usage are generally seamless. The app’s design and trend tracking features are valuable, emphasizing the importance of long-term trends over individual data points. However, certain measurements can be awkward. Due to the requirement of preventing skin-to-skin contact, users must adopt an ungainly posture. While appropriate clothing can mitigate this issue, a more refined measurement method would be welcome in future iterations. Occasional measurement failures occur, prompting generic troubleshooting tips that feel inadequate for a premium product.<\/p>\n
