Update:<\/span> August 6, 2019, Arlo released an update providing HomeKit (Apple) compatibility for Ultra and Pro 2.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arlo<\/strong> has evolved into a substantial and successful entity, operating independently from its parent company, <\/a>Netgear<\/a><\/strong>. We previously reviewed the Arlo Pro 2<\/a><\/strong> system, finding it satisfactory despite some shortcomings. Now, we evaluate the new, upgraded surveillance system, the Arlo Ultra<\/strong>, boasting a 180-degree wide-angle lens with distortion compensation, 4K resolution with HDR for enhanced color, lighting, and contrast, and a new base station. Similar to its former parent company, Arlo Ultra<\/em> exhibits both notable strengths and certain weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netgear<\/strong> has consistently delivered impressive specifications and robust technical performance, and the Arlo Ultra<\/em> maintains this reputation. Image and sound quality are notably high for a surveillance camera. Recording functionality is reliable, and motion and facial recognition perform effectively, although detection through windows remains a limitation, which will be discussed further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Software reliability remains an area of concern, mirroring past experiences with Netgear routers. The Nighthawk R9000<\/a><\/strong>, once a top performer, has experienced performance degradation with recent updates. Similar issues have been observed with the R7000 Nighthawk<\/strong>, where a recent update rendered the 5GHz band unusable, necessitating a firmware downgrade. The EX8000<\/a><\/strong> exhibits similar inconsistencies, performing excellently when functional but proving frustrating when problems arise. Initial setup of the Arlo Ultra<\/em> suggests that additional software refinement may be beneficial. Pairing the new Ultra 4K cameras was straightforward due to complete automation; however, this also reduces user control, as manual pairing initiation is not possible. While older Pro 2 cameras are supported, pairing them with the new hub proved problematic, requiring multiple attempts and device restarts. This complexity could present a challenge for less experienced users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arlo Ultra – The Pros<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Arlo Ultra<\/em> offers a stylish and relatively simple installation process, particularly when using only Ultra accessories. The 4K cameras are larger and incorporate enhanced technology and optics compared to the Pro 2. They also require a different power adapter for charging (included), which unfortunately features a shorter cable than its predecessor, potentially requiring extenders for convenient charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cameras now feature an integrated spotlight that can be automatically activated by motion, eliminating the need for a separate Arlo Security Light<\/a>. Installation is simplified with a magnetic base. The alarm siren is now integrated directly into the camera, rather than the hub, which is a more logical placement since the hub may be located inside a cabinet or room, potentially muffling the 110 dB sound. The trade-off is that the cameras’ siren is not as loud as the older hub’s, but it should still deter burglaries in populated areas. The new hub utilizes microSD card storage instead of USB connections, which is a modern improvement but removes the option for local recording to hard drives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As previously mentioned, image and sound quality are excellent. The system now supports two-way audio, enabling communication with visitors or delivery personnel. While the cameras can record in 4K, live streaming is limited to Full HD. However, the improved optics and image processing still result in superior detail and overall picture quality. Night mode performs effectively, with the spotlight providing adequate illumination for clear visibility and deterring potential intruders. Whether used indoors or outdoors (the cameras are designed to withstand typical weather conditions), the Arlo Ultra exhibits impressive functionality and quality. Files are saved in HEVC format to minimize storage space while maintaining high quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arlo Ultra – The Cons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A key drawback of the Arlo Pro 2<\/em> was its inability to detect motion through glass (windows), a limitation that persists in the Arlo Ultra, which is disappointing considering its price point. Some competing surveillance cameras at half the cost offer this functionality. This is a notable disadvantage for many users who wish to monitor through windows or patio doors. Consequently, users must choose between installing the camera outdoors (which increases visibility and the risk of tampering) or limiting monitoring to the interior, where an intruder must already be inside to be detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subscription model introduced by Arlo is also a concern. The first year includes free cloud storage up to 10GB (30 days). After 12 months, the service costs 1200 SEK per year. 4K recording support requires an additional 240 SEK per year, bringing the total annual cost to 1440 SEK. The basic package with the hub and two cameras (as tested) currently costs around 8500 SEK. Therefore, a two-year surveillance solution, including the subscription, costs approximately 10000 SEK. Opting out of cloud recording reduces costs but also diminishes the system’s security, as a burglar could destroy the hub or microSD card containing the recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mobile app provides good functionality, but 4K cloud storage incurs an annual cost of approximately 1500 SEK after the initial year.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Arlo estimates the battery life at 3-6 months, but this is highly dependent on camera activity and streaming frequency. In our office environment, with considerable foot traffic, the charge lasted approximately one month, which is acceptable. However, users installing the camera in difficult-to-reach locations should carefully consider power options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arlo Ultra – The Concerns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is unfortunate that a company like Arlo, capable of producing technically sophisticated hardware, does not invest more heavily in software development, beta testing, and overall software quality. As with its former parent company Netgear, this is a significant area for improvement. Updates are frequently released, often addressing one issue while introducing new ones. While Netgear’s adoption of DumaOS on some routers shows promise, Arlo needs to enhance its user experience to achieve a seamless plug-and-play operation, minimizing the need for technical expertise or extensive troubleshooting, particularly for consumers seeking basic home security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continued reliance on Adobe Flash for Arlo’s web interface is an anachronism. While the app provides a viable alternative, the inclusion of Flash in a premium product is incongruous and suggests a need for modernization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An update to integrate Arlo Ultra<\/em> into our HomeKit environment is anticipated, enabling seamless control of our smart home and office (this functionality was introduced on August 6, 2019)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Arlo Ultra – Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The Arlo Ultra<\/em> represents a significant improvement over the Arlo PRO 2<\/em> in nearly every aspect. Existing Pro 2 users seeking higher resolution, enhanced image and sound quality, and a wider field of view may find it to be a worthwhile upgrade. The built-in spotlight and siren are also welcome additions. For monitoring outdoor or indoor environments, such as the front or back of a property or a large room, the Arlo Ultra<\/em> is a strong contender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The primary drawbacks are the system’s high cost and the recurring subscription fees for 4K cloud storage, which is a key selling point of the 4K system. The inability to detect motion through glass is also a major limitation, preventing it from achieving the highest rating. Software issues are a concern, though the system is generally easy to use once configured, particularly if adhering to the basic package. However, a premium product of this caliber should offer a more polished experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In conclusion, this is a technically and functionally impressive surveillance system suitable for users who are willing to invest in a high-end solution and require reliable monitoring of either indoor or outdoor environments (but not simultaneously through windows).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
