Of all the gaming mice I’ve evaluated, the Steelseries Rival 710<\/strong><\/a> has consistently been a favorite. Its size, weight, programmability, precision, and overall performance have served as a benchmark for subsequent mice. Upon receiving the Steelseries Rival 5<\/strong>, I found it to be a compelling contender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the Rival 710, the Steelseries Rival 5 is a lightweight mouse. I’ve previously encountered challenges with lightweight mice, specifically concerning the perception of reduced accuracy compared to heavier models. The Rival 5 weighs 85 grams, placing it within the lightweight category, though it is heavier than options such as the Logitech Pro X Superlight<\/strong><\/a>, which weighs only 63 grams and is also wireless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rival 5 is a wired mouse featuring a stylish, braided cable designed to prevent snagging and tangling. Upon connecting it to a computer, the Steelseries application promptly downloads the necessary drivers and identifies the mouse within the list of available devices. This highlights one of Steelseries’ core strengths: their software. The installation process is seamless, functioning equally well on both macOS and Windows. Users gain immediate control over the gaming mouse, allowing for extensive customization. This includes programming all nine buttons, customizing the RGB lighting effects, and configuring five distinct CPI (Counts per Inch<\/em>) levels to adjust speed and precision. Switching between these five modes is facilitated by a dedicated button, making it ideal for adapting to different games or applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I utilize the Rival 5 for both gaming and special effects work in Adobe After Effects<\/strong>, and the ability to quickly switch CPI settings is highly beneficial. The mouse fits comfortably in hand, providing a feel that is both ergonomic and stable, comparable to the Rival 710. The Rival 5 possesses the potential to surpass the Rival 710, owing to its lower price point, lighter weight, and comparable performance and precision. However, the placement of the side buttons slightly detracts from its overall score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching these buttons can be challenging, even for users with larger hands. Actuation of the large, silver-colored button and the upper side buttons necessitates a slight adjustment of grip. While this is a minor detail, it prevents the Rival 5 from completely dethroning its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In summary, the Rival 5 remains a highly recommended device due to its performance and features. The gaming experience is seamless, with negligible lag, and its versatility makes it equally suitable for other applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
