This provided an ideal opportunity to evaluate an alternative to traditional luggage, alongside our usual headphone tests<\/a> performed in-flight. We assessed the Osprey Farpoint 70<\/strong>, a versatile bag comprising a 55-liter backpack and a detachable 15-liter daypack. While the model and concept are established, Osprey has introduced modifications and updated color schemes, making this a noteworthy iteration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manufacturer positions this product as a comfortable solution for situations where wheeled luggage is impractical. The Osprey Farpoint 70 marks our third evaluation of an Osprey product, and the largest bag to date. As with previous tests, we observed intelligent and well-engineered design choices, alongside some potential drawbacks and factors to consider before purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osprey Farpoint 70 \u2013 the concept<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Farpoint 70’s core principle is adaptability. It aims to allow users to carry all their belongings while keeping their hands free. Furthermore, it provides an option for day trips, simplified check-in processes, and secure storage of valuables within easy reach, eliminating the need for an additional bag in certain scenarios. The smaller daypack can be attached to the main backpack using two straps, worn on the front using fasteners similar to a baby carrier, or used independently as a separate backpack. Each configuration presents its own advantages and disadvantages, catering to specific needs and situations.

Consider these scenarios for optimal usage:

At the airport, the primary backpack should be packed and ready for check-in, while the daypack can hold essential in-flight items.

When navigating public transport like subways or buses, attaching the daypack to the front offers convenient access to valuables like wallets and mobile phones, while also deterring potential theft.

The bag is constructed from Bluesign-certified, recycled polyester featuring PFC- and PFAS-free water-repellent DWR impregnation. This combination results in a lightweight, flexible, and water-resistant material, contributing to the Osprey Farpoint 70’s overall durability. Despite its robust construction, the bag weighs only 2.5 kilograms, making it a relatively lightweight option for a 70-liter capacity bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Osprey Farpoint 70 offers a genuinely useful concept. The ability to carry everything on one’s back, freeing the hands, is appealing to both parents managing children and hikers navigating with maps and compasses. A potential drawback is the increased weight when the 70-liter capacity is fully utilized. However, it provides the storage capacity of a medium-sized suitcase without the inconvenience of dragging it. When properly secured with the waist belt and chest strap, the weight is distributed comfortably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The detachable daypack proves to be a valuable asset in various situations. While its internal capacity is limited, it is sufficient for day trips. It also functions well as a smaller everyday commuting backpack, accommodating a lunch box, a change of workout clothes (excluding shoes), a laptop, and other smaller items. The convenience of checking the main bag and only managing the smaller daypack is a significant advantage at the airport. The daypack includes two mesh pockets for bottles or other items, as well as a computer compartment and a small organizational pocket inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly useful feature is the small external pocket located on top of the bag, providing easy access to essential items. The main bag incorporates details reminiscent of traditional suitcases or duffel bags, such as internal straps to secure packed items. The lid includes a mesh pocket, and the entire backpack harness system can be neatly concealed when not in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we don’t like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Having highlighted the positive aspects, we will now address the areas that present potential drawbacks. These considerations are often intertwined with functional and beneficial aspects of the design.

The backpack’s lid is primarily constructed from fabric, which reduces the overall weight but necessitates careful packing. Placing fragile items like a wine bottle at the top is inadvisable, although wrapping it in a towel and positioning it against the backpack’s back offers some protection. The absence of wheels and a dragging mechanism, also contributing to weight reduction, requires the user to carry the bag at all times. This is an intrinsic characteristic of the design and should be considered before purchase.

The 70-liter capacity results in a substantial backpack that becomes heavy when fully loaded. While the Farpoint incorporates numerous functions and intelligent solutions, it does not offer the same level of stability as a dedicated backpacking bag. Maximizing the capacity of both bags can create a somewhat unbalanced feel, with the weight distributed outwards and backwards rather than vertically. However, utilizing the option to attach the daypack to the front significantly improves balance and provides convenient access to drinks and other essentials. The daypack also incorporates Osprey’s hydration system compatibility.

While additional organization within the daypack would be beneficial, a line must be drawn regarding the number of features integrated into a single bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Review – Osprey Farpoint 70<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, the Osprey Farpoint 70 is a well-designed and versatile travel solution. It eliminates the challenges posed by cobblestones and stairs while allowing for hands-free mobility. While ideal for weekend trips, its capacity may be excessive for shorter excursions. Its size might also present challenges when attempting to use it as a cabin bag, although it may be possible in some cases.

Overall, the Farpoint 70 is a compelling travel companion that also provides a convenient backpack for everyday use. Its adaptability makes it a viable option for both backpacking and weekend travel.
