With the arrival of the Arlo: Video Doorbell 2k\/HD<\/strong>, it’s crucial to assess whether these prior shortcomings have been addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon unboxing the Arlo: Video Doorbell 2k\/HD<\/em>, several design changes are immediately apparent. The camera now lacks the prominent logo, and the formerly round button has been replaced with a square design. The integrated battery requires a full charge before installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the battery charges, I removed the previous doorbell, which had been in service since 2021. Its resilience to the elements over three years speaks to the build quality of these devices. Initially, I hoped to utilize the existing backplate for a seamless transition, but the slightly reduced dimensions of the Arlo: Video Doorbell 2k\/HD<\/em> prevent this. Furthermore, the altered screw hole placement necessitates drilling a new mounting point. While these are minor inconveniences, a more considerate design would have been appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to my existing Arlo ecosystem, network connectivity was seamless, automatically utilizing stored WiFi credentials. New users can easily connect the camera via the freely available Arlo app. After the camera is online, it snaps securely into its outdoor mounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The settings interface is largely consistent with the previous model. Customizable sensitivity and zone configurations enable precise tailoring of the camera’s functionality. Given the proximity of a road to my property line, I’ve excluded it from the motion detection zone to prevent unnecessary alerts. However, any activity within my property triggers an immediate notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the doorbell is activated, a notification is sent directly to my phone. An optional indoor chime is available for approximately 500 SEK, providing an audible alert when mobile notifications are missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arlo: Video Doorbell 2k\/HD<\/em> retains the two-way communication feature found in its predecessor, enabling interaction with visitors via the integrated speaker and microphone. A built-in siren can be activated to deter potential intruders. Furthermore, visitors can leave a recorded message if unanswered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image resolution is noticeably improved compared to the previous iteration, with enhanced detail in dark mode. The ability to digitally zoom allows for closer inspection of specific areas. The camera maintains consistent brightness across varying lighting conditions, from direct sunlight to overcast skies. The wide-angle lens has also been improved; my entire 196 cm frame is visible from a distance of roughly 35 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am utilizing the Arlo Video Doorbell 2k\/HD on battery power<\/em>. The manufacturer estimates battery life to be between four and six months, an improvement over the previous model, which required charging approximately every two months. The app provides continuous battery level monitoring and low-battery warnings. While wired power is an option, the convenience of battery power is ideal for my situation, negating the need for drilling and wiring. The relatively quick charging time allows for convenient overnight replenishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A useful tip is to store the backplate removal tool in an easily accessible location. I’ve chosen to keep it on a nail in a discreet spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A notable limitation of the older camera was its complete reliance on Wi-Fi. Power outages rendered it unusable due to the absence of internal memory for recording. Local storage with overwrite functionality would ensure continuous recording. The lack of this feature likely stems from Arlo’s<\/em> desire to promote its subscription service, as local storage would reduce reliance on cloud storage and subsequently, subscription revenue. While the subscription cost is reasonable for a single camera, it becomes considerable with multiple devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, I am satisfied with the Arlo Video Doorbell 2k\/HD<\/em>, particularly its resolution of some prior issues. Were it not for its Wi-Fi dependency, it would be an unequivocal recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
