Like many others, my introduction to Square’s fantastic world<\/strong> was with the release of Final Fantasy VII<\/em><\/strong>. This Japanese role-playing game possessed a remarkable ability to captivate<\/strong> players, constructing a compelling 40-hour universe<\/strong>. The battles were both engaging<\/strong> and strategic, providing an experience players would eagerly immerse themselves in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Kingdom Hearts<\/em><\/strong> debuted in the early 2000s on the Playstation 2. In this title, Square (now Square Enix)<\/em> and Disney<\/strong> collaborated to forge a world that integrated<\/strong> Square’s Final Fantasy concept<\/strong> with Disney’s established tradition<\/strong> of classic films, characters, and references<\/strong>. In essence, Cloud meets Donald Duck<\/strong>. This collaboration also replaced<\/strong> the classic, turn-based combat system<\/strong> with an arcade-style<\/strong> system, emphasizing joystick skill<\/strong> over strategic planning.<\/p>\n

Now, in 2013, Kingdom Hearts<\/em> is presented in a direct remaster<\/strong>, now in HD for Playstation 3<\/strong> under the title Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix<\/em><\/strong>. This compilation includes the sequel Re: Chain of Memories<\/strong> and the 3DS game 358\/2 Days<\/strong> (which, in this iteration, is presented as a single, extended film rather than an interactive game)<\/em>. Having not played<\/strong> these titles upon their original release 11 years prior, these impressions are based on a first-time<\/strong> playthrough.<\/p>\n

\"Kingdom<\/a><\/p>\n

The game’s narrative<\/strong> centers around Sora,<\/strong> a young man characterized by vivid dreams<\/strong> and philosophical inquiries<\/strong>, along with a distinctive hairstyle and a thirst for adventure. He experiences a dream of falling, awakening in an unfamiliar world<\/strong>. This world is both partially recognizable and populated by malevolent forces<\/strong> and Disney characters<\/strong>, specifically Goofy<\/strong> and Donald Duck<\/strong>, who become his allies and companions in arms<\/strong> against evil. Together, the trio embarks on a quest to locate King Mickey<\/strong>, Sora’s friends from his home island, and defeat an army of enemies<\/strong> known as The Heartless<\/strong>. At its peak, Kingdom Hearts<\/em> offers a poetic and profoundly philosophical experience.<\/strong> However, in its less successful moments, the integration of Disney characters delivering dialogue within a Final Fantasy<\/em> setting feels somewhat disjointed.<\/p>\n

The graphics are remarkably detailed and vibrant.<\/strong> From Sora’s initial awakening on the island to the diverse locales visited (ranging from Wonderland to Hercules’ arena and The Little Mermaid’s underwater realm)<\/em>, the combination of colors and evocative atmospheres<\/strong> is consistently impressive. An early boss encounter (The Darkness)<\/em> demonstrates Square’s willingness to explore darker<\/strong> and more serious<\/strong> themes, rendered with equal fidelity to the lighter aspects<\/strong>. Overall, the presentation is commendable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Kingdom<\/a><\/p>\n

The sound design<\/strong> is somewhat inconsistent. There are Disney-themed musical excerpts<\/strong> that initially provide enjoyment but can become repetitive (those familiar with <\/em>It’s a small world after all will understand…)<\/em>. The voice acting is exceptionally well-executed<\/strong>, with Haley Joel Osment<\/strong> leading as Sora, accompanied by a cast of notable Hollywood actors in supporting roles<\/strong> (although not all voice actors reprise their roles from the original Disney films)<\/em>. The familiar sound effects from Final Fantasy<\/em> are present, offering a sense of nostalgic familiarity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The most significant departure<\/strong> from Final Fantasy<\/em> is the decision to position Kingdom Hearts<\/em><\/strong> as a third-person perspective arcade adventure.<\/strong> The camera<\/strong> offers free 360-degree rotation,<\/strong> allowing players to control their character’s jumps, punches,<\/strong> and interactions<\/strong> with the environment (e.g., lifting barrels, pushing stones)<\/em>. Effective 3D platforming is a skill mastered by Nintendo in Mario Galaxy<\/em> and Sony in Ratchet & Clank<\/em>. Kingdom Hearts<\/em> does not execute this element with the same level of polish<\/strong>. The controls lack precision<\/strong> and are difficult to fully master<\/strong>. Several segments, such as the chase after Raiku early in the game, become unnecessarily challenging<\/strong> due to the unstable nature of Sora’s movement<\/strong> in pressured situations. The boss encounters also suffer occasionally; the game incorporates a lock-on mechanic<\/strong> intended to facilitate target tracking,<\/strong> but the chaotic movement of Sora, the boss, and the camera can transform it into a guessing game<\/strong>, leading to uncoordinated attacks<\/strong>. While the controls are generally adequate<\/strong>, the game’s playability is undeniable, but this missed opportunity<\/strong> does detract from the overall enjoyment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The other notable issue<\/strong> concerns the story<\/strong> and its pacing<\/strong>. The initial 2-3 hours<\/strong> of Kingdom Hearts<\/em> are not particularly engaging<\/strong>. It begins stylishly and poetically<\/strong>, incorporating a brief tutorial and manageable battles. However, the gameplay soon transitions into a repetitive series of “run-and-fetch XYZ”<\/strong> quests, repeated numerous times consecutively<\/strong>. Combined with relatively lengthy<\/strong> and slow-paced cutscenes<\/strong> (which are now skippable in this remaster)<\/em>, the momentum slows significantly<\/strong>, potentially causing players to lose focus and interest<\/strong>. While a considerably more dynamic and rewarding adventure<\/strong> awaits those who persevere, the control issues<\/strong> and lethargic beginning<\/strong> may cause some<\/strong> players to abandon<\/strong> what is ultimately a worthwhile game<\/strong>, provided they dedicate the necessary time<\/strong> and effort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Kingdom<\/a><\/p>\n

Briefly, regarding the other two titles<\/strong> included in this package: the sequel, Re: Chain of Memories<\/em><\/strong>, introduces a combat system<\/strong> based on a card-based strategy mechanic<\/strong>, interwoven with arcade elements<\/strong>. This system aligns more closely with my personal preferences<\/strong>, and it is enjoyable to continue the adventure after the initial game, which requires approximately 15-20 hours to complete, depending on the player’s level of thoroughness. The inclusion of 358\/2 Days<\/em><\/strong> is a curious choice<\/strong> \u2013 while the story is compelling, it is presented as a non-interactive movie<\/strong>. Perhaps a standalone Blu-ray release would have been more appropriate.<\/p>\n

I appreciate both Disney<\/strong> and Final Fantasy<\/strong> (particularly installments 7 and 9)<\/em>. Kingdom Hearts<\/em><\/strong> is visually impressive<\/strong> and represents something of a dream fulfillment for Disney enthusiasts<\/strong>, offering encounters with numerous (100!)<\/em> classic characters from Disney’s<\/strong> extensive film library of approximately 50 titles. However, the game is over a decade old<\/strong>, which is noticeable in certain aspects. The controls are not fully optimized<\/strong>, and the game occasionally struggles to immerse players in engaging narratives<\/strong> and objectives immediately<\/strong>. The decision to merge FF-style role-playing with arcade gameplay<\/strong> also presents a challenge in identifying the ideal target demographic<\/strong> \u2013 platforming enthusiasts<\/strong> may find it too deliberate<\/strong>, while FF fans<\/strong> might perceive it as too demanding\/complex<\/strong> in requiring agile control inputs<\/strong>. Despite these shortcomings, the game delivers a compelling<\/strong> and, after a period of acclimation, immersive adventure<\/strong> set within a truly magical universe<\/strong>.
