What actually separates this new machine from the original PS4, and is it worth buying or upgrading to?

Note: This article will be updated continuously over the coming weeks with new game releases that support PS4 Pro and our thoughts on them.

It is nice to be right. Earlier this year, we wrote a column about how the old paradigm in the console world must change, just as it long has for PCs, home computers, and mobile phones. When Sony discussed the PS4 with us at E3 in Los Angeles in the summer of 2013, they said they expected a “ten-year lifecycle” for their (then) upcoming Playstation 4. We took that statement with a—to say the least—large grain of salt. Ten years is an infinitely long time in the world of technology. It feels like Apple’s iPhone has been with us forever, but even it hasn’t reached ten years yet (it will next year, 2017). The difference between the first iPhone presented by Steve Jobs in 2007 and the current iPhone 7 is night and day. No one reacts today to users replacing their smartphone every year—or at least every other year. And at the risk of sounding like a product of a consumerist society, why should we run the same consoles for so much longer? To be generous, we can interpret Sony’s 2013 statement in hindsight as meaning that the format PS4 would remain for ten years, while they secretly planned to break a long and sacred tradition: upgrading an existing console format in the middle of a generation’s lifecycle. Looking at the successful PS3 and Xbox 360, they enjoyed the peak of their lifespan for exactly six to seven years.

What is PS4 Pro?

The new PS4—which for a while went under the codename PS4 Neo but has now officially been named Playstation 4 Pro (PS4 Pro))— is a souped-up version of the exact same x86 architecture as the old PS4 (a requirement for them to be 100% compatible with each other). The updates consist of slightly faster clock speeds on the eight Jaguar processors that make up the CPU (2.1GHz instead of 1.6GHz, approx. 30% increase), twice as powerful graphics processor (2.3x GPU, based on AMD Polaris) designed to handle 4K and HDR, and slightly faster and smarter memory management (512 MB more usable memory and approx. 24% more bandwidth, though still 8 GB total). PS4 Pro supports the faster Wi-Fi standard 802.11ac, but we recommend connecting via Ethernet cable for the fastest and most reliable connection (and there are, after all, a bunch of large patches to download). We also get USB 3.1 support in the ports, and finally, the base model offers a 1TB hard drive as standard and a SATA3 connection, which is very welcome and opens up for upgrades with even larger and faster hard drives (we will update the article on upgrading the hard drive in your PS4 shortly). <del>Just like its predecessors, however, the PS4 Pro does not support external hard drives connected via USB for game installations, which is a real shame as it is the simplest and most convenient way to get more storage capacity without having to open the machine (and it works fine for the competition, doesn’t it?)</del> UPDATE: With firmware 4.50, PS4 Pro gains support for both external hard drives up to 8TB as well as boost mode, which can improve performance in all old PS4 games, even without a patch.

That PS4 Pro and the original PS4 (or PS4 Slim, which has now replaced the base model) must be fully compatible with each other was a requirement from Sony and an understandable one. They didn’t want to suddenly abandon 40 million PS4 users after three years and sneak out some kind of Playstation 5. At the same time, this requirement brings a fairly significant glass ceiling for what PS4 Pro is and can become, since Sony promised not to release any exclusive games for PS4 Pro that don’t also work on the original machine from 2013, which then becomes the lowest common denominator.

4K and HDR provide better-looking games – but there’s a catch…

The big news with PS4 Pro is that “true” 4K gaming is finally coming to the console world! Combined with 10-bit support for HDR, this means a major visual boost for games that support the technologies (take the opportunity to read our article with everything you need to know about 4K, HDR, and which TV you should buy). There will be both new games and patches for already released games that allow us to enjoy a resolution that is theoretically up to four times as high, faster frame rates, and an expanded color palette (thanks to HDR – High Dynamic Range). Note that several media outlets report incorrectly on HDR support for PS4: HDR support is coming to all PS4 models (even the oldest one) as of firmware 4.0 or later, and the first existing games to support this through patches available by November 10 at the latest include Uncharted 4, Rise of The Tomb Raider and The Last of Us: Remastered (which received its HDR and 4K patch as early as Nov 1). This requires however that you have a 4K and/or HDR compatible display (TV or projector) to take advantage of the improvements.

(Example video. Don’t forget to switch to 4K mode on the gear icon in the bottom right corner and watch in full screen)

On the outside, the PS4 Pro is very reminiscent of the old PS4. The black and stylish parallelogram design is intact, with an extra terrace layer on the main unit itself. The Dual Shock 4 controller was changed very slightly for the release of the PS4 Slim, and if you don’t immediately see the difference, we don’t blame you. It still feels just as good in the hand and has all the basic functions of the old one, but with the small addition of a thin light source above the touchpad. Players have apparently given feedback that they wanted this, as the light on the controller can indicate, for example, if your character’s health is low. Oh well.

The difference in games with Pro

PS4 Pro’s increased resources mean the possibility of giving us higher resolution as well as better and more stable frame rates. However, the improvements will not happen automatically; they must be released via patches (which have so far been free, but could potentially cost money from certain publishers in the future—we hope no one chooses that path, as it generates a huge amount of ill will among consumers who upgrade). (Disclaimer: see also boost mode, which attempts to give a boost to all games automatically but does not guarantee anything.)

To maintain 100% compatibility with the old PS4, Sony has chosen to downclock the PS4 Pro to the exact same clock speed, half the GPU capacity, and specs as the old PS4 in games that are not patched. Microsoft chose a slightly bolder path with its upgrade, where Xbox One S gave a little extra boost to games with dynamic frame rates, thanks to slightly increased resources (approx. 7% faster GPU). Around 45 existing PS4 games (see the list at the bottom) have received or will receive patches by the release day (November 10) at the latest, but to avoid risking unexpected bugs in older games, they seem to have chosen to play it safe. Regardless, there will be plenty of games to get started with, and basically all upcoming games for the PS4 from now on will have some kind of “extra sauce” mode for the PS4 Pro.

How games look on PS4 Pro

We at senses.se are big fans of 60 fps, and it is a pure joy to see games like The Last of Us—which admittedly had a variable frame rate up to 60fps already in the remaster—now get a more stable one, paired with better colors (unfortunately not native 4K at the moment; the image seems to be upscaled to 2160p at 30 fps and 1800p at 60fps, which is still better than the original 1080p). The HDR mode is miraculous, to say the least, and demonstrates the strength of the technology, where light sources really come alive in a completely new way thanks to the dynamic contrast in light and shadow. In the first scene, where Joel’s daughter Sarah walks around the abandoned house at night, the light sources create an atmosphere that makes it feel like a brand new game. HDR mode is available on all PS4s (if you have a display that supports it), but the bonus on PS4 Pro is that you don’t have to lock the frame rate to 30fps. The game doesn’t hit the 60fps target all the time, but it does so much more consistently and frequently than on the old PS4. The result is spectacular! Even though we’re talking about a nearly four-year-old title, it is still overall one of the most beautiful and atmospheric games on the format, with fine anti-aliasing technology that removes most ugly artifacts and shimmering in the image.

The team at Insomniac Games has released a patch for their magnificent Ratchet & Clank reboot on PS4, which gives us both HDR and “higher” resolution (not specified, but we’d say it’s 2160p with fair confidence) via a technique they call “temporal injection.” The technology is designed to eliminate ugly, low-resolution thin lines (“stair-stepping”), and although R&C was an incredibly beautiful game when it first arrived, they’ve turned the quality dial up several notches here with more vibrant colors, better lighting handling (HDR), as well as objects and characters that embody the very definition of smoothness and high resolution. Beautiful!

One of the most visually impressive games from day 1 is Rise of The Tomb Raider where you can switch in real-time between three modes (via the menu): 1) “Enriched Visuals” mode, which provides more advanced textures and higher quality on objects close to the camera, though unfortunately it bugs out and adds objects that pop in and out of view along with some noise and rather ugly artificial sharpness at a distance. 2) Silky smooth 60fps in Full HD, or 3) crystal clear 4K at 30fps, which is truly a major upgrade in terms of quality, detail, and image stability (unfortunately no HDR support in this game).

In short, 4K means that we theoretically get four times as high resolution as previously possible (Full HD = 1920 x 1080p, 4K = 4096 × 2160p). The logically and mathematically inclined might protest now, seeing that 2160p is only double that of 1080p, which is perfectly correct. The confusion arises from mixing up the number of pixels with the pixels’ width/height. A 4K source actually and mathematically has four times as many pixels (approx. 8.8 million) as Full HD (approx. 2.1 million). Take out your calculator and check 😉

Another game that gets both HDR and basically doubles its resolution at the same time (by dynamically shifting between 1800p-2160p) is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Here we are talking about an opening scene that is something else, with a sunset you can almost feel and breathe in, and skin textures and water that feel alive, for lack of a better word (depending on how good your display source is).

The inFAMOUS games are a couple of years old now, but they are actually also on the list of the most visually impressive games getting updates for PS4 Pro. Both Second Son and First Light showcase grand lighting and neon effects in motion, and here too you can switch between a higher frame rate (up to 60fps) and higher resolution with more detail (1800p via checkerboarding).

Finally, we have Uncharted 4 which receives HDR and new life in its contrast, colors, and light sources. For a game with such rich and varied environments, this is something of a match made in heaven. However, the resolution doesn’t quite reach true 4K, which we would have liked (we’d guess it’s around 1440p), and the image overall felt a bit soft on our reference panel, not possessing the same sharpness and clarity as in Rise of the Tomb Raider’s 4K mode. There is no doubt, however, that arguably the PS4’s most beautiful game just took another step forward. And those who play multiplayer will be pleased that the game has raised its resolution there from 900p to true 1080p.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor has received a PS4 Pro patch that is supposed to provide “native 4K” and “better visuals.” We were curious about what this meant in practice and loaded up the game to look. The 4K mode is noticeably more detailed, and the image becomes “calmer” than it was before. But just as we suspected, this is not true 4K (which “native” usually refers to), but dynamic upscaling up to 4K. Unlike Rise of the Tomb Raider, thin lines don’t look nearly as good, and even though the level of detail is clearly better overall, it isn’t on par with Lara’s adventure. The “Better Visuals” mode was a bit of a mystery and a carrot clearly aimed at Full HD users. Since you have to enter and exit the main menu of the game to change graphics modes, it is difficult to do an A-B comparison regarding details, but the boost in graphics that mode is supposed to provide was minimal (if even noticeable). And the big question is: why no 60fps support at a lower resolution? Disappointing. We would rather have seen HDR support, which would have done much more for Shadow of Mordor’s murky environments with many dark brown mountains, deep green forests, and pitch-black areas.

A much more enjoyable experience was Activision’s latest Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which this year is once again created by our favorites, Infinity Ward. The boost on PS4 Pro is marked; the developers combine technology that provides a resolution near true 4K (3840x2160p, when the game is still or nearly still) and a slightly lower resolution (approx. 1560p) when moving, along with its smooth 60fps, using checkerboarding and temporal anti-aliasing to hide flaws. The result is truly impressive, and the question is whether this is the game that has come closest so far to our sweet spot for “true” 4K and 60fps simultaneously. It’s a must-have for your collection if you’re getting a PS4 Pro—it’s a really fun and incredibly intense FPS action-adventure, featuring Kit Harrington from GOT as the villain (buy the Legacy edition to also get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in its remastered version, also enhanced with the same dynamic upscaling on Pro – 1560p-2160p).

One of the games that supports native 4K is Bethesda’s reissue of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition. Even when we tried it on the standard PS4, the game showed much smoother and finer graphics than we remember from 2011 (though the game’s age is noticeable in, for example, the facial models). Skyrim was no hit on PS3 as the Cell processor hindered the developers, who achieved better results with the Xbox 360. Now the game is best on Playstation because it also receives native 4K support (3840x2160p) on Pro, which mostly looks really good. The problem is that the frame rate takes a hit at high resolution—the game occasionally dips a noticeable number of frames below 30 fps, which is an absolute minimum. It is still worth experiencing in 4K on a good display, but they should have had better support for Full HD, as they could have easily used the PS4 Pro’s resources to offer, for example, extreme detail at 1080p instead. We hope for a patch that fixes both of these things soon.

IO Interactive’s episodic reboot of Hitman also receives a couple of nice boosts on PS4 Pro. Besides upscaling to 1440p, the game also supports an unlocked frame rate, meaning it can be enjoyed with noticeably smoother flow, up to 60fps—though in truth it fairly rarely hits exactly 60fps. But if you lock the frame rate to 30fps, you notice a clearly worse, albeit more consistently jerky frame rate. Hitman does not support HDR, yet the light sources and aliasing are markedly improved, perhaps thanks to the extra resolution. Objects and surfaces also feel more alive with improved details and reflections.

Regarding multiplayer on PS4 Pro, there is a heated debate about whether Pro users will get advantages in patched games that run faster for them. No, says Sony. To keep the playing field fair, everyone gets exactly the same (locked) frame rate, dictated by what the old PS4s can handle. So there’s no risk of unfair advantages or, as some might have hoped, getting better at multiplayer thanks to their newly purchased PS4 Pro. Update: Now reports are coming in that Battlefield 1 players have indeed received better frame rates in multiplayer and that several new games in PS4 Pro mode run slower on PS4 Pro than the old PS4. This is of course worrying and likely software bugs, which Sony says they are investigating and will fix.

4K, supersampling, and HDR place much higher demands on the hardware, which is expected to pump out basically four times as many calculations and graphical information, and everything must also be in motion. That’s a lot of pixels to keep track of. Because of this, we can also suspect that the performance increase in PS4 Pro—30% more power in the CPU and approx. 2.3 times faster graphics—isn’t quite realistic to produce four times more image information with, despite a lot of new and clever software solutions. The technical specifications are thus likely a bit on the low side. Therefore, no games we have seen and tried so far (with the caveat that this could potentially change in the future) have completely true 4K resolution; instead, they are upscaled from a lower resolution to a higher one via nifty techniques like checkerboarding or geometry upscaling 4K (compare the debate between PS4 and Xbox One at release, where the PS4 often hit 900p and upscaled to 1080p while Xbox One upscaled from 720p, hence a certain advantage for PS4 in many games regarding true resolution). But we’re going to stick our necks out right now and say that for 95% of all players, this will not mean any visible difference at all, because it is incredibly difficult (read: basically impossible) to see actual differences at high resolutions in motion when displayed on screens that are 50″ or smaller, sitting at a normal distance.

Speaking of workload, the PS4 Pro has to work quite a bit harder than the old PS4, but thanks to smarter technology and more efficient FinFET circuits, the machine overall draws less power than the very first PS4 (though more than PS4 Slim). The fans are still quite audible, and when they are working hardest, they peak at around 55dB. Not hugely disturbing if you have a reasonable game volume, but they are still clearly audible, and the PS4 Pro really doesn’t like being enclosed in a TV cabinet; it thrives best with good access to (fresh) air.

There is no doubt that games supporting 4K and HDR look noticeably better on PS4 Pro than they do in Full HD on PS4. In fact, it’s so damn good that we’re starting to approach PC experiences in graphical terms (even though high-end PC models long ago surpassed the PS4 Pro’s fairly modest specs). At the same time, you can’t compare price/performance—the PS4 Pro aims for a suggested retail price of around 4,000 SEK, and for that sum, there is no PC in the world that can compete at all (it’s not strange that a 20,000 SEK machine performs more, but it still doesn’t look five times better). However—to fully utilize the PS4 Pro boost, you will most likely need to upgrade your existing TV or projector, unless you’re already sitting on a recently purchased flagship model. 4K and HDR are a regular jungle, and we have a separate guide to 4K and HDR—but a basic tip is that you shouldn’t buy the first 5,000 SEK TV you see on sale from the big retailers (even if it says “4K” and “HDR”). Because just as it was with HD when it arrived—where 480p (which is pretty lousy) was allowed to be called “HD Ready”—there are oceans of quality difference between a cheap 4K and HDR panel and a more expensive one.

A simulation of what HDR can do for contrast and color reproduction.

Playstation’s recently released Playstation VR also benefits from PS4 Pro’s increased resources—the first games to get patches are Battlezone and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. The latter is still just as crazy and enjoyably scary, but unfortunately, the feeling of low-resolution graphics and shimmering lines remains from the old PS4 (this may be patched further on release day). The recently released Crytek game Robinson: The Journey is, however, significantly more impressive in terms of graphics and execution and is so far one of the best adventure games with a real story we’ve played on PSVR. It also includes reasonably fast movement, which allows you to ride out and get used to motion sickness in moderate doses. For upcoming VR titles, PS4 Pro’s increased resources are great, but unfortunately, there’s a technical clash because the PSVR’s external box only supports HDMI 1.4 and thus cannot pass through a 4K and HDR signal to your display (that requires HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2). So you’ll have to deal with swapping cables every time you want to play PSVR versus PS4 Pro with 4K and HDR. Strange is an understatement—can someone fix this?

Disadvantages of Playstation 4 Pro?

And this touches upon the PS4 Pro’s first major hurdle: For most users, the effect of upgrading will mostly mean better frame rates and a smoother feel in a handful of games that support it (and far from all 1300 existing PS4 games are getting patches for Pro improvements—we especially miss our beloved Witcher 3 (update: it is getting a Pro patch in autumn 2017 along with the Xbox One X) and as mentioned, unpatched games receive no boost at all due to compatibility reasons—though they can get a little push via boost mode).

Smooth frame rates are fantastic, and a game at 60 fps on a good Full HD plasma/OLED is truly great in itself, so there are benefits to be gained even at 1080p: including through so-called super-sampling which provides a smoother and more detailed image. But it’s not a massive revolution worth throwing out your old PS4 for and running out to buy a PS4 Pro on day 1. You who are a power gamer / early adopter of 4K and HDR, on the other hand, will get a significant boost in the gaming experience. 4K on a quality panel is magnificent (feels like you’ve put on super-sharp glasses, as you suddenly see details that weren’t there before), and similarly, HDR will revolutionize how we look at color palettes and “true” colors, light, and contrast. The problem is that HDR cannot be shown (properly) in still images today—most of us don’t have computer monitors that support that color gamut, and neither do the printers that send out ads. So Sony (and TV retailers) will face a real challenge in selling the benefits of 4K and especially HDR in PS4 Pro, which cannot be shown in an image but must be experienced live (good for retailers’ demo units in stores, though, if they take the time to set everything up correctly and skip the standard factory mode with loud neon colors).

The second major hurdle is the PS4 Pro’s mandatory compatibility with the old PS4. As mentioned, this sets a very distinct glass ceiling and a framework within which the PS4 Pro won’t really be able to live out its full potential. Much has happened in three years, and if they wanted to change formats, they could offer a machine that easily handled 4K at 60fps and had much sharper processors, more memory, better lighting handling and anti-aliasing technology, more advanced architecture, and consequently could give us more advanced games. But releasing such a machine also means creating an entirely new format, something Sony understandably does not want to do. Therefore, we now get an upgrade that is substantial but won’t feel like a paradigm shift for users who are not prepared to simultaneously invest in a new display source costing between 15-25,000 SEK if you want something of high quality, in addition to the purchase of the PS4 Pro. If you also want to keep your surround sound, a new receiver that supports HDCP 2.2 is required to pass through the 4K and HDR signal, which adds another 3-7,000 SEK depending on the sound quality you demand. Together with the PS4 Pro machine, we’re talking about a total investment of around 30,000 SEK, minus whatever you might get for your old gear in trade-in/resale. That’s serious money.

Another strange lapse in the PS4 Pro is the absence of an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. It is a big mystery, actually, especially if you have ever experienced how incredibly good UHD BD films actually are. Surely it’s a matter of shaving off every (licensing) cent possible on the price, but we wonder how many hundreds of SEK it would have added to the machine’s cost when Sony can bulk-buy millions of OEM-UHD players for its Playstation factory? Microsoft has included a UHD BD player in its souped-up Xbox One S, which at its price of approx. 2,700 SEK is the market’s most affordable UHD player today (it also handles gaming in HDR and upscaling to 4K), and that Sony lets the competitor fire such a shot at an open goal is completely incomprehensible. Yes, physical media is in sharp decline and the future absolutely belongs to streaming, but UHD requires massive amounts of data to be transferred and decoded, and streaming will not be able to compete with real, pressed discs for many, many years. Even now, Netflix can barely claim to reach the top tier of image and sound quality found on physical Blu-ray; dreaming of the 4K and HDR information in UHD and audio tracks in Atmos / DTS: X (which are gigantic) means all users must have fat fiber cables and Wi-Fi networks that can move gigaBYTES per second, not to mention that Netflix, HBO, and Amazon need to significantly update their server parks. Not likely that this lies within the next three to five years, and by then, the PS4 Pro will likely be quite passé. So dare we hope for an updated version of the PS4 Pro next year that has a UHD BD player? (a PS4 Pro S?)

More pixels = finer details

Should I buy a PS4 Pro?

PS4 Pro is an impressive, affordable, and overall very pleasant upgrade to a console format that dominates the Swedish market right now. It is significantly faster and offers major graphical boosts in games for users who invest in good 4K and HDR on their TV/projector, as well as in games that support its extra power. The introductory price is, in our opinion, a few hundred SEK too high, so when PS4 Pro drops down to 3,995 SEK (around the time availability also improves), it would be 1) foolish not to go for a Pro if you are considering buying a brand new PS4 (even if you do not have 4K/HDR). PS4 Pro is so much better that the small price difference of around a thousand SEK is well worth it!

Upcoming Final Fantasy XV on PS4 Pro

2) If, on the other hand, you already own a PS4 or PS4 Slim, the situation is a bit more complicated regarding selling/trading in your old companion and paying the difference for a Pro. 2 A) If you have a proper 4K and HDR source we definitely think you should do it: that is when PS4 Pro will shine brightest and make all your buddies green with envy (at least until Xbox Scorpio is released next year). 2 B) If, on the other hand, you do not have a high-quality 4K and HDR display source, it is more questionable if it’s really worth it right now. Existing PS4 games in your collection will not automatically get better with PS4 Pro, and even if we love the faster frame rates that some patches provide, we don’t know if the price difference of a couple of thousand SEK feels worth the improvements in—at present—a handful of games. Our advice there would be to wait until you have acquired a good 4K and HDR compatible TV or projector or wait for upcoming PS4 Pro game releases that you simply must have in the PS4 Pro version. In the meantime, the PS4 Pro will also come down a bit in price, and the initial hysteria with limited supply will have time to settle.

Upgrading a format in the middle of its lifecycle is not only smart in our opinion, it is actually necessary to keep up in a time where our smartphones are quickly catching up to our computers and game consoles with annual updates. PS4 Pro is the first step in that direction, and we applaud Sony for the courage and initiative. At the same time, we see a bit of an uphill battle—after the wave of enthusiasts has emptied the first stocks of Pro machines—in trying to sell something that few people currently can utilize 100% because they lack the right display source. For a family that isn’t hardcore gamers, there is a significant difference between an investment involving approx. 2,700 SEK (PS4 Slim) and one that costs approx. 4,500 SEK (PS4 Pro). Therefore, we believe that adaptation will occur gradually over the coming years, as we get more affordable TV sets that have 4K and Premium HDR support (the cheapest ones only have a part of HDR’s full color palette—check that carefully before you buy). When that happens, more people will finally be able to partake in the pleasure that 4K gaming actually entails!

These already released PS4 games support PS4 Pro from release day (Nov 10 onwards)
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (upscaled graphics to 1440p)
Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection (2160p)
Batman: Return to Arkham (no official patch, but gets better frame rates on Pro)
Battlefield 1 (faster frame rate in multiplayer, up to 1656p upscaling of graphics)
Battlezone (PSVR)
Bound
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (checkerboarding up to 2160p, faster frame rate in 1080p)
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
Diablo 3 (dynamic upscaling 1080-2160p, improved effects)
Driveclub VR (PSVR)
Fallout 4
Farming Simulator 17 (1440-2160p, improved depth of field in 1080p)
Fifa 17 (gets true 4K native resolution on Pro)
Firewatch
Helldivers
Hitman (1440p variable frame rate 30-50 fps)
Hustle Kings
inFAMOUS: First Light
inFAMOUS: Second Son
Knack
Mafia III (1440p, improved shadows and depth of field)
Mantis Burn Racing (truly delicious with the whole package – native 4K, HDR and 60fps on Pro)
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (dynamic upscaling 1728-2160p, “improved mode” in 1080p, see above)
NBA 2K17
Neon Chrome
Overwatch (gets a tiny boost such as 4K HUD and more stable upscaling to 1080p, barely noticeable)
Paragon
PlayStation VR Worlds
Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2017
Ratchet & Clank
Resident Evil 7 (improved lighting, resolution 2240×1260 + HDR)
Rez Infinite
RIGS Mechanized Combat League
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Robinson: The Journey
Smite
Super Stardust Ultra
The Elders Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited
The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (has native 4K support, but needs patching as it dips in frames and has a lower frame rate on Pro than standard PS4)
The Last of Us: Remastered (1800p at 60fps or 2160p at 30fps, HDR support)
The Last Of Us: Left Behind (DLC)
The Playroom VR
Thumper (PSVR)
Titanfall 2 (dynamic upscaling up to 1440p, slightly faster frame rate in 1080p)
Tumble
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
Viking Squad
Watch Dogs 2 (1800p via checker boarding, supersampling in 1080p with improved antialiasing, patch 1.04 fixes frame rate issues)
The Witness
World Of Tanks
XCOM 2

Imminent games getting PS4 Pro support from release:
Days Gone
Dishonored 2 (1440p)
Farpoint (PS VR)
Final Fantasy XV (1800p via Checkerboarding, 1080p with 60fps in the works.
