Parappa The Rapper<\/strong> is a rhythm-based music game originally released in 1997 for Sony’s PlayStation (PSX or PS One). The original PlayStation boasted a wealth of games and franchises that continue to inspire sequels and spin-offs. In line with the current retro trend<\/a>, Sony is re-releasing this classic title, now celebrating its 20th anniversary. However, revisiting the game three PlayStation generations later highlights both its strengths and its limitations.<\/p>\n

This PS4 remaster presents a somewhat uneven experience. The core graphics have been upgraded to crisp full HD with vibrant colors, preserving the charming, flat 2D character designs (PS4 Pro users benefit from dynamic upscaling up to 4K). Players will encounter familiar tracks such as Master Onion’s “Kick, Punch, it’s all in the mind!” Those with prior rhythm game experience should find the initial five levels relatively straightforward (requiring, in our case, less than 15 minutes). Be forewarned, however, that the final, sixth level demands considerable patience and persistence. A notable drawback is the decision to retain the original, low-resolution cutscenes, which appear visually jarring in comparison to the updated gameplay visuals.<\/p>\n Why were the low-resolution cutscenes not addressed in the remaster?\n

The game centers on Parappa, a naively optimistic hip-hop dog, as he raps along with various characters. These interactions range from learning the fundamentals of hip-hop to tackling everyday challenges like baking a cake or rushing to the restroom. The soundtrack features engaging rhythms that evolve in complexity from level to level, culminating in a challenging final stage where tempo shifts and strict timing windows test the player’s skills. Indeed, timing accuracy can be inconsistent. While we may not be professional Stomp<\/em> performers, we possess considerable experience with rhythm-based games such as Just Dance<\/strong>, Space Channel 5<\/strong>, and the VR title Thumper<\/strong><\/a>, lending credence to our observations. The core mechanics of Parappa<\/em> feel somewhat imprecise, a characteristic perhaps overlooked two decades ago. Given the graphical enhancements implemented for this re-release, the omission of improvements to the gameplay mechanics is a missed opportunity. Players may find themselves anticipating beats slightly ahead of the rhythm meter, which detracts from the overall rhythmic experience.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, this remaster offers a polished, albeit imperfect, glimpse into gaming history. The game retains its original charm and PS-era nostalgia; the music and dialogue remain memorable, even after many years. However, it remains uncertain whether the title will resonate as strongly with a new audience, as its appeal largely lies in nostalgia. In its modern form, the experience is somewhat diminished by the aforementioned gameplay limitations. Given the relatively low price point, a purchase may be worthwhile, or prospective players may consider waiting for a sale (Parappa 2 is currently available to PS Plus members for 36 kr, for example). Despite its flaws, we enjoyed revisiting Parappa and anticipate eventually mastering the final level on PS4.<\/p>\n
